Okay, I set up a 5 gallon mini bow, I added the clownfish and the hippo something, and they both were dead less than 10 minutes later!!! I went to the store, and the owner gave me two new ones. I don't want them to die too. Whats going rong?

Yeah, hippo tang, thats it. Yeah, i have acclimated them. My salinaty? If you mean the salt, im using instant ocean, 1/2 cup per gallon as it says on the bag.

you should have a hydrometer handy to check it.
it should read between 1.018 and 1.023
you can't just follow what the bag says to add.

How long ago was it set-up?
most salt needs about 1-2 hours to fully dissolve.
That's with no sand or rocks to get in the way.
If it's a new tank, you should let it run empty for 1-2 days just to make sure

Marine fish need to be acclimated a bit slower than freshwater fish
float the bag for 10 minutes, then add 1 tbls of water every 10 minutes for 1 hour.

again, take the hippo back, it is doomed in a 5 gal tank
I've seen them 10" long already.

So you are mixing up the salt and then adding fish? Unfortunately, its not that easy. First off, that is not an accurate enough way to measure salinity.

Before I spend too much time listing all the things you need to do before you add more fish, I would recommend you do some more research. A good place to start is herehttp://www.reefs.org/library/newbieguide.htm

That will surely generate more questions, and we are here for that.

Okay, well. I cant take the hippo back, i wont get a refund. I will get a hydrometer. My tank has been set up for 24 hours. The saltwater expert told me to do this so that it will cycle. I guess i wasn't acclimating enough.

Cycling a tank is the time the tank needs to grow the beneficial bacterial that will help maintain the stability of water quality. No way this will happen in 24 hours. There are plenty of excellent local fish stores, but advice from them is renowned for its dubiousness.

They should at least give you store credit for the hippo, but if not you should return it anyway and figure its a lesson learned.

Man I thought I got some rough info from my LFS. :( At least you came to the right place for advice. I don't think I'd take the LFS advice anymore. Do alot more research.

Before you spend too much time, you should sit back, have a little chuckle, and realize minime's spot on. ;)

I would chuckle if something was funny. If he's a troll I am bored. If not, I give him a straight answer.

You are both right, Taz. The chuckle was for the link, the minime's spot on was for the relatively obvious. I think I saw jawsfan asking how many nurse sharks can fit in a 20L a few minutes ago. ;)
