I had to drill my sump for some bulkheads today...and i used silicon to seal it up blah blah. i screwed up one of the bulkheads and had to redo. but some of the silicon was set up so i had to use windex and **** to get it off. my tank has no life in it...im just setting up the plumbing and ****...im guessing i should rinse all my stuff off a lot before i put any life into it to get all the chemicals off? it was a dumbass thing to do and i knew it, but i had to get the silicon off, but it wasnt dry enough to pick off yet.

Peej- you shouldn't need silicone with the bulkheads as they have a seal of their own. Put the seal and larger, flanged side of the bulkhead on the inside of the sump and you will have no problems.

well it was actaully a DIY bulkhead that i made out of some PVC fittings...it actaully worked very very well and only cost 55 cents. so i really did have to use silicone because there really wasnt anything elase to seal it with. i just dont want to put fish in my tank in the future and have them all die because i sprayed windex all over it 2 months ago

thanks a lot...i had to add on a 19 gallon rubermaid thing to my wet/dry/sump. the skimmer i ordered wouldnt fit so i said what the hey...good excuse to expand!!
could i put lots of algae in the sump? or should i have a dedicated refugium? i got a lot of space left over in the rubermaid..kinda wondering what i could use it for...?!?!?

Uhh..create some baffles and partition a low-flow area for a 'fuge is my suggestion.

I see what you're saying about the bulkheads, though I would be sore afraid of having such with no gaskets (if I understand you correctly). Glad that you're thinking sump and 'fuge, though, I think you'll be happy once everything's tweaked well.

yea no gaskets, but its two pieces of pvc, i dont know what they are called, but the screw together. so when u put the teflon tape on, some silicone between, screw thpse bastards together tight, and silicon around the edges, its water tight as can be.

hahah yea . i dont see why i would pay more than 50 cents for a piece that i can make. it might not be so pretty...and yea there might be lots of silicone on the sump, and yea the two bulkheads are made from different pieces but damnt i got a bulkhead AND a can of soda.

Um, I've tried that before and it inevitably ends up leaking. I think you'll save yourself headaches down the road if you don't do it that way. It may take a while, but silicone is not designed for that type of application. Your best bet is to get a rubber washer for $.99 to place between the pieces of PVC, along with the teflon tape. They should sell them at any hardware store.

Why won't silicone work? Explain to me why this is different than the silicon that seals up most of our tanks? in my case, the silicon isnt even bearing any of the pressure. id be willing to bet that just the pressure of the two pieces screwed together would be enough to seal it

It worked for me, I had that particular tank up about a year, then I sold it.

neways back to the main subject, don't be to worried about the silicone. I've accidentally dropped like a couple drops of rubbing alcohol in my tank which is a 29 gallon. It's been 2 months and nothing has died... sooo...

im not so worried..im just ganna throw both my sumps in the shower and let it run all over everything for a good while to make sure its squeeeeeeeky clean.

at any rate...im gettin my ro/di next week and that will pretty much do it for the hardware. im goin for a pretty aggresive tank...wondering what to put in it that wont eat eachother...hahha. its a 75gallon and all that good stuff. i like aggresive animals...well i like my cats and they are silly. i like tattoos and piercings and loud music and i want a tank that when people come over they run away and pee their pants! HA!

Yes, these things can actually be bought and kept. Keep in mind that these guys can squeze through any opening as big as their beak (read any small crack or hole)

Also keep in mind they can kill you in a few minutes, and you probably won't even realize you've been bitten! Don't bother calling 911, unless you live right next door to the hospital. Probably tops the list of worst pets you can own.

Flushing with copious amounts of water should do the trick. Windex is mostly ammonia, no?
