My Gem Tang that was supposed to arrive today from the SF area was apparently stolen from the Oakland FedEx depot. The supplier took it to FedEx last night and was able to provide a tracking number. FedEx claims the package never shipped and that the tracking number is "not in their system". Per the supplier they have had other things stolen from this FedEx depot. I trust my supplier and not FedEx. As most of you know this fish is rarely imported due to its off-the-beaten-path distribution, so there can't be that many around. So if any of you in the Bay area know anyone who suddenly has a Gem Tang it is most likely mine and stolen. Fortunately the supplier insured it for its full value so no one looses out except FedEx. Thanks,

John

I've never saw a Gem Tang, as I generally can
afford only cheap fish, but that stinks! Nobody
makes me more angry than a thief. I hope you
can get another one. Thief can't even care for it
properly I'll bet!

Who in the Bay Area sold you a Gem tang and would ship it to you?

I have loads of contact with many LFS in the greater Bay area, so I'll keep my near to the ground and ask around. If they try to sell it, it'll be found.

Sorry to hear about your loss, I've always wanted a Gem tang.

I'll ask around at the places I know as well, a fish like that is rare enough to not go unnoticed. A couple years ago one of the LFSs in the bay had a black and white maxima clam stolen right out of the store, and apparently they found out who did it. I really hope you get reimbursed in some way.

This is really sad. I would imagine these are petty theives that just steal boxes and then try and hock whatever they find. It's hard to believe that someone would actually know what a Tang is at Fedex and then be able to have a buyer on hand.

But, you never know.

lol. did he just pocket the maxima?

Yep.
When I worked at LFS's in LA, many of them were right across the street from each other. At least once a week, someone would come in with some critter in a cup and try to sell it to us.

That's soooo messed up, John. I'd throttle someone too if that happened to me. At least it was insured, but I wonder if the guy who stole it knew of its contents or if he took it simply because of its insured value. It would be an utter waste if he didn't know what he was getting and discarded it :(

It is probably not appropriate to say this..., but tang should taste fine if you pan fry it..

dude keep us updated though, i really want to know if you track the tang down.

(if a non hobbyist stole it, it's probably dead already, right? but that would mean it was a random theft)

What a beautiful fish, shame someone lifted it.

Don't most fish suppliers use boxes marked LIVE FISH? So hopefully the fish was taken by someone in the hobby (maybe an employee of the supplier?) and is alive and well in some thieving bastards tank (can I say that word here?). It would be a real shame if that beautiful creature was just tossed into the trash.

Something here doesn't make sense to me. If your supplier took the package to FedEX, then wouldn't the package get scanned at drop off? :?: The tracking # shows up in the system minutes after scanning, you get a tracking number when you print the shipping label, it will not automatically show up in the system. I don't think someone can just remove a tracking number from their system, to assist with loss prevention.

The insurance wouldn't apply unless the package showed up in their system, since FedEx said it was never in their system they would never pay for a package they claim to have never had. Look at it this way, you could make a very good living from making bogus claims with the major shipping companys.

I am saying your supplier is lieing but it just doesn't sound right.

Green Mariner-

Yah - I thought about that too. Seems like if they have the tracking number then the package would have to have been scanned. I guess they could have dropped the package off with a pre-made label and whoever received the package at FedEx took it and never scanned it in to the system. FedEx says they have a record of the of the number, but the package was "never shipped" - whatever that means. I have delt with this supplier before and they have always done me right. I can't think of any reason as to why they would lie to me. They have offered either to find me another Gem tang or refund my money completely. I haven't decided what I am going to do yet. I really would like the fish. Supposedly, I have heard from two sources that one of the wholesalers in LA has a new collector in South Africa, where this fish came from, and they should be more available in the future.
