Oh, Oh..this is going to get the Tang Police out in full force.

You have too many tangs for a 125g tank. You have too many fish(period) for a 125g tank. I would suggest he only keep two tangs and trade the rest in for credit. The two he keeps should be of different species. Cripes - no wonder they are all fighting.

You might get away with adding this Sailfin Tang if it is the largest of the Zebrasoma species in the tank. If it is slightly smaller than the existing Yellow and Purple, it's going to have a tough time fitting in. Give it a week to sort out. Tangs usually work out their dominance issues after a few days and things will settle down, but it may never be peaceful.

The Hippo and the Naso won't bother the Sailfin too much, if at all. The Yellow and the Purple is the problem. The Sail fin will survide, I guess, if he is at least 1.5 times the lenght of the largest of the Purple and Yellow.
This is too amny tang in this tank. I would get the Naso and the Sailfin out and keep the other three.

yah, ive been telling him for some time that he has too many fish..he pawned some LR off on me a few minutes ago, now he wants to give me the purple tang..the sailfin tang has mostly sat in the corner all day, behind a powerhead - but hes swimming around now..the naso and hippo dont bother him at all more its mostly the largest damsel (sgt.major) and the purple tang..and they havent done anything in a while so were just watching and waiting..on a side note his fire clows (not tomato clowns as i posted earlier)..one of them bit me and drew blood! pesky lil buggars they are .. very territorial. =\

Hey, c0n? Has anyone actually given you a proper welcome? I mean, even if there are some who think you're a con..;) we should at least welcome you.

And quit complaining that someone's "pawning off" that live rock on you! People pay actual money for it! :P <sm pokes c0n in the ribs>

We'll here's my tank spec's with live stock...so let the bashing begin(hope this takes the heat of you "c0n") 8)

oh, yea I must of miss counted before, I actually only have 21 fish total (is that still considered alot??) heres the break down of what fish i have with ages:

tangs
yellow (4.5)
scopas (4.5)
hippo (3.5)
sailfin(3.5)
powderbrown(3.0)
kole(2.0)
convict(1.5)

Dwarf angels
Cherub (2.0)
Lemon (1.5)
Golden (1.5)

Misc fish
Royal gramma (4.5)
Green chromis (4.5)
bangaii (2.5)
pajama cardinal(3.5)
seaweed blenny (3.0)
tidepool blenny (3.5)
maroon clown (1.5)
dragonet scooter (2.0)
dusky jawfish (2.0)
Banner butterfly (1.0)
fathead anthias (6 months)

well I think thats it for the fish, please excuse the spelling. Heres my tank spec's (I thought I listed it under my profile before...oh well ) :

180g (acrylic) with dual internal overflows and 6.5" deep sand bed (1 " caribsea medium and rest is Southdown),280 lbs liverock , 2 Iwaki MD70's(one pulls water from the tank and other the is return to the tank), 15w UV, DIY skimmer,Korillin 3002 calcium reactor, 33 gal RODI resivoir (barracuda 100gpd RODI).

Lighting: all URI VHO: 3 Icecap ballists (2 430's & 1 660)
4 6ft bulbs @160w ea. (2 aqua sun & 2 atinics)
4 36" bulbs @ 95w ea.(50/50)
total watts: 1020w @ 5.6w per gal.

Heres my sump room specs(all hard plumbed in a different room):
2 50g rubbermaid agricultral tubs (horse troughs), top sump is a refugium with 4" sand bed,80lbs liverock, calupra and 10 hawaiian red mangrove trees. the bottom sump is my mixing sump(its gravity feed from the top sump) and is where my calcium reactor drips into and were I add supplements sometimes.

As far as acclimation for the fish I usually follow the norm:

Float bag for about 15 minutes for temp stablization and then put fish in a seperate container and drip for 45 minutes and then put them in the tank( and I never put any of the LFS water in my tank- I just dump it out)

Background history: I've been running this tank since April 1999, I actually started with a 58g Oceanic reef-ready tank in March of 1998, but I got a good deal on this 180g(used) so i moved up to a larger tank and transfered what I had in my 58g to the 180g. I did all the plumbing and mounting the lights myself (guess 16 yrs in the military made me handy with tools )
Oh and yes I'm sure I've broken every rule about having too many fish and corals, but my tank is running strong and as you can see from above everything is growing and healthy.

Take it easy...you only have one life, so enjoy it!

burb... be.. bu.....jibber.... eh. tweak!!!!!

Ok, cOn, lets start with you. Besides having shocking husbandry for a start lets have a look at a hyperthetical 125 (please note these are UK gallons so your figure will be slightly less)

Dimensions: 152cm L x 61cm W x 61cm H/60" L x 24" W x 24" H
Surface area: 0.93 sq m/10.00 sq ft/1440 sq inches
Volume: 566 l./125 gal.
Volume after displacement: 510 l./112 gal.
System type: Reef tank
Total stocking density: 28"/71cm of fish (built up gradually)

ok now lets see what you (or your dad) have compared to a possible maximum of 28inches of fish.

Nasau Tang - Adult length 20 inches (ooh only 8 inches left)
Sailfin Tang - Adult length 16 inches (well thats blown it)
Hippo Tang - Adult Length 12 inches (oh dear)
Yellow Tang - Adult Length 8 inches
Purple Tang - Adult Length 10 inches
Sgt Major - Adult Length 6 inches
Green Chromis x 6 - Combined Adult length 18 inches
Lawn Mower Blenny - Adult lengh 3 inches
Tomato Clowns x 2 - Combined Adult lengh 7 inches
Coral Beuty angel fish - Adult length 4 inches

and the grand total is........ 104 inches, ok so thats only three times your possible limit, and youve managed this within a year, OMG!!!!!!! you have some sereous issues to sort out my freind. And dont give me any "but the LFS guy said so" you have to be joking. Not to mention that all of this is being run with a DIY skimmer, give me strength.

ok, im dreading this but here we go, Gobyman your next

ok 180G + 50G + 50G (see im not here to make an example, this is accurate)

280G Hyperthetical tank size

Dimensions: 218cm L x 76cm W x 76cm H/86" L x 30" W x 30" H
Surface area: 1.66 sq m/17.92 sq ft/2580 sq inches
Volume: 1269 l./279 gal.
Volume after displacement: 1142 l./251 gal.
System type: Reef tank
Total stocking density: 63"/160cm of fish (built up gradually)

again UK gallons so your figure will be slightly less, and with 63" of fish and 21 of them thats an average adult length of 3 inches per fish, somehow i think your over but lets break it down for you.

yellow (4.5) - Adult length in inches 8
scopas (4.5)- Adult length in inches 12
hippo (3.5)- Adult length in inches 12
sailfin(3.5)- Adult length in inches 16
powderbrown(3.0)- Adult length in inches 8
kole(2.0) - Adult length in inches 7
convict(1.5) - Adult length in inches 8
Cherub (2.0) - Adult length in inches 3
Lemon (1.5) - Adult length in inches 4
Golden (1.5) - Adult length in inches 3
Royal gramma (4.5) - Adult length in inches 3
Green chromis (4.5) - Adult length in inches 3
bangaii (2.5) - Adult length in inches 3
pajama cardinal(3.5) - Adult length in inches 3
seaweed blenny (3.0) - Adult length in inches 4
tidepool blenny (3.5) - Adult length in inches 4
maroon clown (1.5) - Adult length in inches 6
dragonet scooter (2.0) - Adult length in inches 5
dusky jawfish (2.0) - Adult length in inches 3
Banner butterfly (1.0) - Adult length in inches 10
fathead anthias (6 months) - Adult length in inches 4

and your grand total is.... 129, and your maximum (very generous maximum to boot) 63. so your one and a half times over your limit.

Oh and yes I'm sure I've broken every rule about having too many fish and corals, but my tank is running strong and as you can see from above everything is growing and healthy.

for one there is no rule about too many corals, we grow reefs, reefs are made of coral, goes to show what mickey mouse school of reef keeping you subscribe too.

And how exactly are we to know that these fish are healthy from your stock list, presumably by the same methods you devise from, ignorance!!

For any noobs out there reading this post, dont be fooled, it cant be done, problems will insue, death will take hold and rot will set in. Besides the disasterous husbandry these two systems exhibit, the stocking levels are way over board. And i bet neither of them have a hospital tank, just one fish is all thats needed to take down the entire system. More money than sence.

Ill give my advice for free, though i feel that these words have probably been ignored in the past, because "oh yes, your doing something of such cutting edge brilliance that means that all the natural laws of chemistry and bio-ecology just fall to the wayside in your greatness", wake up and smell the skimmate lads.

as fish keepers we have a responsibility to ensure the well being of our livestock throughout the entire of its existance, adult fish lengths do matter.
