;) Thank ye, Matt. It is indeed! (Ain't you ever heard of diatomaceous earth?)

It's also a filtration medium used for swimming pools and polishing aquarium water. :D

Mmm.. no, it's strictly particulate filtration, to the best of my knowledge.

Hi,
Here's my marine bio degree finally paying off...
"The calcareous chalk White Cliffs of Dover...are partially lithified deposits composed largely of foramnifera [common in our aquaria] and coccolithophores [planktonic calcareous algae]. Fine grained siliceous deposits called *diatomaceous earth* are mined from other deposits [radiolaria, a glassy amoeba like animal, and diatoms]. This fossil material is a valued component in flat paints, pool and spa filters, and mildly abrasive car and tooth polishes."

From Oceanography 4th Ed., by Garrison.

HTH, Matt
