I just got my turbofloater 1000 sump model, with the rio 2100 pump venturi needle wheel pump. The instructions were really bad needless to say. I figured out that the rio 2100 pump is just basically a venturi pump to create the bubbles, and you need another sort of pump to feed the skimmer water. It says in the manual to connect your overflow to the skimmer input, I dont think thats a good idea at all. Consindering the overflow is a 1" connection and the input for the skimmer is like 1/2 or less. Would a better alternative is to just use a power head to feed the skimmer in the water input? I just had a Aqua Clear 402 power head hooked up to it, and it seemed to work well. I am not sure if that is to much, or to little for the skimmer. Can give me your recommendations?

Thanks!

im not familiar with this exact skimmer, but im pretty sure you only need one pump to operate the skimmer.

You definatly need another water source. The bottom of the skimmer has 2 openings. 1 Is for the main venturi pump. The second is down below which is your water inlet. The directions state to connect this to your aquarium overflow which i stated in my post. This is basically how the skimmer fills with water. I do not want to T off my skimmer overflow because everything is already piped. So thats why I was asking if a simple powerhead would do the trick, and which kind and GPH. basically if you only connect the venturi pump, and place it in your sump the skimmer wont fill with water. But if i run my overflow across the 6" tube they have for the water inlet, the skimmer fills with water. So it seems it doesnt need a strong pump.

Thanks for the help

I have a TF 1000 and I feed it as the the instructions say. From the overflow but I don't have all the water flowing to it. You have to put a T or a y pipe in the return and reduce it down to the skimmer. I've hade mine set up this way for over 10 months now and it works great.

I had a TF1000 on my 125 gallon for 5 years before I broke it and replaced it with something else. I know I only used the RIO pump with it. At the end I was working on T'ing my overflow so the water would go directly to the skimmer before hitting the sump. Just didn't get that far.

In fact, I'm thinking of going back to one because it did such a great job. Set it and forget it. Just can't get lazy on cleaning. :)

HTH,
