I just dropped by one of the many LFS in my area, and this particular one had a Nemo sale. Anyone else seen this in their LFS? I know sales of clowns and blue tangs are up according to all accounts I've seen.

Out of the 5 LFS we have in town (all pretty decent some more environmentally conscientious than others) I have not seen any Nemo specific advertising or large stocks of clowns / tangs. Have heard a few rugrats screaming that they 'Found Nemo!' when they see the perculas.

I have seen one store with Nemo advertising, The Aquarium in Concord. Lots and lots of it. Ugh. Posters for the movie on the door, a complete set up raffle (50 gallon), more posters near the livestock. I went in with my new baby, and one of the sales ladies said, right off the bat, "Does he love Nemo?". I said "She is 8 weeks old".

Other stores in the area have more clowns, but no blatant tie ins.

These lines made beer come out my nose. The 'deadpan' of the 2nd sentence had me floored...

Ocean Enviroments in Fort Myers, Florida has a "Nemo Special" sitting right on the sales counter. It is a 10 or 15G tank with a little bit of LR, 1/2" or so of sand, and a cheapy HOB filter of some sort. And of course, one false perc. This is the $149 "take Nemo home today" special. The clowns in their tanks are maked as "captive bred". They have never ever specified if any fish in the store was capive or wild caught! Scumbags! :x

heh

one of our drygoods managers put a sign on the counter at the register explaining what was wrong with some of the ideas of nemo-like the size tanks hippo's need :)

we do absolutely no nemo marketing at all- and immediately discourage anyone from just jumping in to s/w for nemo

i just ignore those annoying kids, and avoid the families(not that many) when they come in to the store(like i avoid the plague  )

i have too many more important things to do

I initially had "Nemo" up on the clownfish tank about 2 weeks before the movie, but erased it a few days later. What was the point? No kids were going to come in and buy 20 Nemos...

Now, now Vitz...we all know you have *nothing* important to do...

i find it disgracefull that a store would do such a thing. its just like the dalmation craze of a few years ago. next thing you know well be seeing poor clowns on the side of the road with signs "you found nemo, now give me a home" lol.

The aquarium store i work for in dallas, DNA, is selling a 3 gallon eclipse tank with some LR, a perc, mushroom rock and a cleaner shrimp for 160. I am against them and when customers ask me i refer to them as death traps.

My LFS set up a nano with 20 very young perculas for sale the week of the movie. There were no "Nemo" related signs though.

vitz,

I often visit the local fish stores with husband and six year old son in tow. I've been involved with saltwater for nearly 11 years now, so don't always assume that the "family" is just there because of Nemo. :)

Besides, this whole Nemo thing has elicited a tremendous interest from my son in my aquariums and in marinelife in general. He's been pulling my books, reading what he's able to, and asking LOTS of questions. This is a good thing. :)

Take the opportunity to educate both the kids and the parents, not ignore them. Maybe if you lay out the expense and commitment necessary, you might change the minds of the ones not really serious about it.

BTW, I applaude the manager and the store in doing just that.

Yah, LFS here in Greenwood (south side of Indy) has an Eclipse 6 with a chunk of rock and a false-perc for I think $89.

How's that store doing? They had just reopened and gotten their systems back up when I moved away. Does Bob still work there? Little guy, actually knows his stuff...?

Yes I just stopped by my LFS last night and they had cleared out an aquarium and (over)stocked it with about 100 clowns/hippo tangs, all about 1" in size.

Yep. An LFS here had one of those movie theater style posters of "Finding Nemo" with the Pixar (TM) logo and all displayed right out front. I was particularly bothered by it because the store has actually been a pretty decent place frequent.

I think some people just don't think things all the way through. So many locals are also willing to sell/buy a 10 year old an unfortunate "Nemo-esque" clownfish that he/she knows nothing about.
