Holy Bioload!

I just did some calculations on the adult size of the fish I have in my 65-gallon tank (AETech Sea Dragon skimmer, Tetratech 500 powerfilter, Powersweep 218 powerhead, airpump). When my fish are fully grown, I will have 71 inches of fish!! Time to start a new tank, NOW!

The question is, do I keep the pipefish and seahorses in the 65 and start a new tank for the other guys, or vice versa? The new tank will have to be a FOWLR, because I can't afford the MH lights (to buy or to run). The horses love their seagrass bed and goronians. Can these live under PC lighting? Anyway, heres the list, and remember, all these guys are juvies:

Total inches of fish is misleading. Pipefish is slender and long. You cannot possibly put them into calculation. Seaponies is hard to quantify by inches. However, putting damsels with ponies and pipefish? You sure your seahorses gets their fair share of food?

And neon gobies? Heh, I wouldn't even consider them into calculation...........

Of course, if you need something to convince your significant others into getting another tank......... by all means, include total length of the caulerpa in your tank as well............

Inches of fish is very misleading. A tang may be only 9 fish-inches, but you can't put a tang in a 20 gallon tank!

They've trippled in size since I got them in August. I feed the whole tank flake/pellet food first, then I put in some daphnia for the pipes (lots), then the mysis for the horses. By the time the horse food gets there, the chromis have gorged themselves so much they just pick at the mysis. The seahorses also "hunt" the mysis on the bottom of the tank, where the other fish won't touch it if it isn't floating around.

So far, so good. But I think I will need to set up anot\her tank eventually. maybe just a plain ol' 55 for the rest of the gang, and the horses can keep their palace with the soft corals. They love hitching onto the finger leathers!

I use frozen daphnia and Sweetwater zooplankton, which a mix of daphnia species. I also have a DSB wich is very rich in copopods and amphipods, and lots of macroalgae, also rich in critters. I olny bought the pipes because they were already eating frozen. The horses are captive bred and have been snicking frozen PE mysis from the beginning.

The pipes are so much fun to watch, zooming around the glass doing figure-eights. They swim upside down mostly, thought it's kinda hard to tell on something so narrow. Thank god they have that disc tail, or I woulnd't be able to tell the front from the back!

how do you feed the pipefish and horses without hte green chromis devouring all the food? i have a hard time as it is distracting mine while i feed the others. my 2 chromis constantly fight my blue fin for any scrap of food.

I also reeealllly over feed. My 'trites and 'trates are always fine, though. I have 4 sea cucumbers, lots of snails, hermits, and a cleaner shrimp, filter feeding softies and gorgonians, so nothing really goes to waste. The macroalgaes and DSB are a big help in nutrient control.

Me love pipes!

I have four pipes in my reef, banded, banded cleaner, janus and a blue line (don't you just love common names!?!). I have had the blue line for over 3 years. They are in a 150 with 2 tangs, 3 bartletts, 2 black percs and some other stuff, and have no problem getting enough food. I feed a whole lot as well, but I have a 180 gallon sump full of macros to take up the slack.

It's not really a formula, I just looked up the adult size of the species I have (from Liveaquaria.com, or you can try Wetwebmedia.com) and added up the inches! Liveaquaria says half an inch per gallon (that is, one inch per two gallons) is okay, but some say that's high.
