Current inhabitants include a mombasa lion, blande naso tang & foxface along with 3 cleaner shrimp, snails and corals. I would like to add some or all of the following:

hippo tang
pink tail or crosshatch trigger
purple tang
possibly an eel

opinions most welcome.
Thanks

Sorry, I guess I was apprehensive about the post from the start, what with triggers in a reef, multiple tangs and the lion, etc. I was expecting some flames.

So, can I assume that all the tangs would get along, and the trigger would be ok with the lion, corals, & shrimp? At what point would I approach maximum density? If I were to get an eel, what kind would you recommend?

Back when I did Fish Onlys, I more than once had triggers and lions.

One time, my Assasi trigger killed the Volitans lion, then died from the sting. The coral banded shrimp had quite the feast that day...

The other time, I had a Clown trigger irritated everything that moved, ate rocks, came after me in the tank, and was generally a PITA.

I would stay away from the trigger. They are beautiful fish that should never make their way into a fishtank. Too moody. No offense to those that have them :)

My lion ate a flame angel once that I never in a million years would have thought would fit in his mouth. I say this because the flame angel and the hippo tang have a similar body shape/size. In fact, a hippo is a little more slender than an angel, and an easier fit. It lived fine with a Coral Beauty though, which again, is similar in body shape. Go figure.

Purple tang, should be ok as long as it's big enough.

As for eels, i have no experience with them, so I wont comment.

I'd add no more then one more tang, so pick one of the two on your list. Expect a little aggression from your Naso for the first few weeks, but things should settle down. As for eels, a golden dwarf is nice ;) Snowflake and Zebra eels are good too. These stay a good size for captivity and won't make a snack out of other fish (for the most part).

I've had a green wolf and snowflake eels. Both are fairly mild (as far as eels go) and are super fun to keep. I would think either or both would be alright in your tank.

Thanks for all the input, does anyone have any other recommendations of fish I could add to this mix? What about a marine betta? On a side note, BOMPH, love the logo, what do you think about the ARod deal?

On a tank that size, after it has matured for a year or so, and has a nice population of bugs, a mandarin fish would be cool, next to lionfish, they are my favorites.

As for Arod, I hope he comes over. I feel sorry for anyone who has to face us! I usually have a 'naming' theme for my tanks, my last tank, all the fish were named after characters in Beatles songs. I was gonna go with a Yankee theme this time, i would really like a clownfish named Arod playing third base in my tank ;)

I'd like to have a mandarin, the tank is 3 years old w/a good pod population, but I thought the lion would eat the mandarin, or would he 'know' to stay away?

Oh yeah, I forgot you had a lion. There goes that idea :)
