I have a 90 gal display and 20 in an open sump under tha stand. I use 3 gals of makeup everyday and want to know if that is average. Since my tank is in the waiting room at our office, I have to go in over the weekends to add water. How can I slow the evap rate? A friend said that is, in part, due to running my fan 24/7.

How much evap is normal/average???

Fan will definitly cause evap, which is what cools the tank

the only way to stop evap is to seal things up better, can you do that without having to invest in a chiller?

Float switch also will make your life easier

In my case, I have a 120g, no sump, VHO lighting, fan running when VHO's are on (not for cooling, but to prevent condensation on canopy). About 3/4 g of make up per day.

3 g for a 90 with an open 20 sump doesn't sound horrible, but does sound pretty inconvenient.

Take a look at various auto-top off devices. This will save you lots of time in the weekend... unless you enjoy driving to your office and visiit your tank critters.
