For those that know mysis...

Seeing as how mysis are freshwater shrimp, and we feed them to our fish, should we be adding a HUFA supplement as well?

I'm thinking that using FW shrimp to feed SW fish would have the same inherent problem as feeding goldfish to lionfish - lack of HUFA's.

(HUFA = Highly Unsaturated Fatty Acids)

Certainly couldn't hurt to soak them in either Selco or Selcon.

Or you could make your own Mitch Mush (tm) with fresh shrimp, oysters, squid, nori, dulse, etc. It'd be cheaper in the long run and your fish would get a more varied diet.

Depends on the mysis brand.

Piscine Energetics Mysis relicta is raised in cold lakes in Canada, giving it a fairly high fat content, certainly much better than goldfish! An analysis can be found here: http://www.mysis.com/analysis.html

Hikari Mysis has added vitamins and minerals, although it's total fat content is only about 1/4 of the PE Mysis. http://www.hikariusa.com/mysis_shrimp.htm

My mandarin downs mysis by the bellyfull, which is why I bought her.

She has a ten gal QT with some LR and LS, but definately not enough to support this fish. I was under the impression that mysis was a healthy food for marine fish (better than brine for sure).

She seems to be fattening up as she is looking decent now and she looked like a tooth pick when I bought her 6 days ago (another reason I bought her...I couldn't let a border line starved mandarin that actually ate dead food die in the shop being passed up for the 7 other fat mandarins there).

Since she liked whole dead shrimp and she won't eat dead shrimp chunks, I can't feed her prime reef or anything but whole frozen mysis.

Are the mysis not providing the proper nutrition?

PE Mysis is the best there is, IMO. Have been using it for 3 years. We use it in our shop. It's very high in fatty acids... even fussy fish will eat it readily. It has a high "appeal factor" the whole mysis are frozen right on the boat, and when they thaw, you can SEE each individual mysis shrimp. Something about eyeballs on it :lol: seems to stimulate a feeding response in even fussy eaters.

You know, Jenn, the eyeball thing is also important when fishing and using plastics (my favorite). You can get leadheads with eyes painted on them, but they're not quite as good as something that really mimics the eye, I've found.

I've only seen Hikari and AquaYums (?) mysis here. Is PE available in Calgary, if so where please? My brother is a Flames reporter for the Herald so I could have him bring me some next time he comes down.

I was thinking it was the eye balls that got her to hit mysis. Mysis chunks don't do it for her, but a severed head will make her hit right away. 8O
