Back in my early days of fish keeping I had a 20L go bad. It was my fault though. I placed it on an old dresser that was bowing down in the middle a tad. That must've caused a lot of stress on the bottom cause the bottom pane of glass cracked and the rest is history.

I have never had a tank leak or fail, or a stand collapse. :)

I have always used AGA, and will continue to do so.

A staple holds better than a nail. Think about it: its like two nails with a brace across the top joing them for more streangth.

Bob

Hehehe...who said anything about nails? I use #10 wood screws.

Just trying to point out the strength of staples. Certainly re-enforcing with 2x4 is gonna give you more piece of mind and strengthen the stand further however I don't see it necessary

I watched my little cousins give a num chuk (martial arts weapon) demo. and low and behold he was alittle bit to close to his 20g fresh water tank. You should of seen his dad coming up the stairs with water on his shirt. Tims room was on the 2nd floor and his dad was reading the paper in the living room on the first floor and needless to say 20 gals water was coming down!! We still get a good laugh out of that one!!

I came home from one brutal friday at work to find my 58G Oceanic tank leaking a few months ago from one of the silicone seams. Naturally the leak was almost at the bottom of the tank. I went into panic mode and saved all my LR, corals and fish in 5 gallon buckets. I have since had a custom acrylic tank made. I do not want to risk a glass tank leaking again.

The funny thing is, when I put my old oceanic tank on the street for garbage pickup, someone drove off with it after only about 5 minutes. I probably should have left a note on it that it was leaking!

I bought a 33g once that was a cheap "no name no guarantee" tank. It completely split open, although set up the same as every other tank we have....(levelled, on styrofoam).

It happened almost the very moment we were coming downstairs and we fortunately rescued all the occupants. :D

Interestingly enough, there were others who had the same tank/same size split. 8O So we kinda know what store in the area NOT to buy tanks from....

A friend of mine set up his AGA 125 in the garage to leak test it, passed with flying colors. So he moved it into the house and moved livestock from two or three tanks into the 125. A couple of days later as he's looking at the tank the front pane splits and water starts dribbling out.................stopped in the next day and it was ugly.

I was lifting a 50 gal onto a new stand and the whole thing teetered and fell onto the floor in a thousand pieces. Does that count?

I'm sure Dan would have posted this in time....

At least the pictures aren't on that server anymore!

Mine was of course caused by fire. Actually, I discovered that tanks are quite tough. I threw the tank out onto the front lawn (literally), dragged and rolled it roughly to the driveway and left it there for several months. Then I hammered out the broken glass and the overflow, siliconed in a new pane, and it held water!

'I only had the nerve to use it as a vivarium, filled about 5 inches, however.

Does anyone have any photos of a failed tank or stand? I know that is the last thing on your mind (to take pictures) but i am sure someone one has.

my 55 gal has had a very small leak pretty muvh ever since i got it (18 months ago). i fixed it with a two part underwater putty and it bung up the hole fine. every now and again i just peel of the old and replace it. just recently it's started getting worse so i will be replacing tank stand the lot in a month or so. i don't know if you can get the stuff in the US but over here there are two types you can use: "milliput"- a modelling clay and plumbers underwater putty. they both come in equal parts and you knead them together and apply. they can also be used for aquascaping and attaching corals. you must have it over there?? good for temporary fixes. yeah i know there's nothing temporary in 18 months!!
