Yeah they advise you not to but I don't know anyone who follows that. Even the Ultralith thread on RC, everyone was affraid to take their phosban reactors offline.

Fauna Marin claims that the zeolite has a phos binding capactiy. They state that when you shake the reactor the effluent that comes off will contain some zeolite dust with phosphate and nitrate bound in it. This will either be consumed by the corals or skimmed out. I wouldn't be surprised if the UltraLife is just zeolite powder.

Also the RG rep told me that they don't recomend P04 products because you can out compete some of the bacteria and upset the balance.

Balance this!

i believe it dude! It was bad news for me when i introduced GFO after 3 months of ultralith use...I am still recovering from that incident.

Maybe if you use GFO from the beginning it works...But for me it sure as hell threw SOMETHING out of balance and things began to recover as soon as i pulled that crap (GFO) out of my system...

After my little incident i go strictly by the book. how long have u been using it?

All right. my phosban stock has worn down... time to give one of these products a shot. Anyone have any suggestions for me? (i am currently running a refugium, but I'm gunna remove it for the time being while using these phosphate removal products)

I had the fuge primarily to get my phosphates down. I've noticed that it does a great job at getting nitrates down (mine are now 0 on salifert), but doesn't do that much for phosphates. I want to see what'll happen when I go strictly to GFO for phosphates and see what happens to the nitrates without the fuge.

I've also heard of some anecdotal stories from some people that sps colors improved after removing their fuge. Seems strange to me, but I'm always up for giving something a shot.

Not suggesting that others do this, but I'm curious to see what happens.

I have tried Phosban, Rowaphos, whatever the Drs F&S stuff is called, and Phosar from Warnermarine. After trying them all, going forward I have decided to use the Phosar.

Inquiring minds want to know why?

After trying all of them, and taking measurements with the Hanna Meter, I found that when you do a price comparison in terms of amount of phosphate removed for evey dollar spent Phosar was the best value. (when buying in bulk, when buying smaller amounts Phosar and Phosban are pretty much a toss up)

The only one of the three that I would not use again is the stuff from Drs. F&S. It was extremely dirty and needed to be rinsed alot more than the others (I do rinse all of them). Not worth the extra hassel.

From your tests, did you find that phosar and phosban were very close to equal as far as getting phosphate down? Thinking about picking up that 4kilo tub.

Matt, good recommendation on the phosar. I've continually had .08 readings on Hanna using Phosban (I was much higher and phosban did bring down my levels substantially). This week I have gone to a new clean sump (no DSB and no fuge). Monday -Saturday this was up and running. I tested the phosphates Saturday morning and they were still at .08 while running the phosban. Essentially no improvement on the phosphate readings after getting rid of my DSB and chaeto. (the phosban was 2 weeks old though). I then put new phosar in both my reactors and tested this morning and came up with .04!!! FINALLY!!!!!

This is not definitive evidence that phosar is better than phosban because my test has a couple other factors which could have contributed to the results. I will say that I'm going to continue with the phosar going forward though. Good thing I bought the big bucket!
