I have a 20 gallon acrylic tank collecting dust so I thought I should put it to use.

If anyone has or will soon have a mantis they would like to get rid of please get ahold of me. I would pay for any shipping costs and would love to give him a good home......

I don't have a mantis, but would love to get one!
What's the best environment to keep one? You guys have 20gal tanks so that's not an issue....what kinda filter, lighting, etc. is best for these lovely lil guys?

They don't need much. Mine is in a 5 gal. Any lighting is fine, I have PC lights because I grow corals in his tank. Filter of your choosing; live rock, hang on filter, skimmer, whatever, they don't have any special requirement as far as that. I just have a little whisper hang on filter and some live rock.

The only thing I did special for mine was put a titanium heater in because I am scared of him striking a glass heater and breaking it. The glass seems rather thin on those.

Think I'll dig out my other 10gal and get ready

I've already got a 10gal going on our bathroom vanity that's now home to about 30 upside down jellies and hundreds of pods...

Maybe I'll put it on her nightstand so she can wake up at night and have him staring at her...

The ones they charge that kind of money are way prettier and are bigger than the typical ones found on live rock.

My mantis came in on Gulf View aquacultured live rock, and everyone I know who has ordered this rock eventually finds a mantis or two.

Here is mine.

I picked up my first Clown Mantis yesterday, so I thought I'd revive this thread. Unfortunately, I won't get to see it smash anything for several months. After the 2 hour ride home, it wasn't moving and lost both of its clubs. I'm guessing it must have just molted at the LFS and was really stressed during the trip.

laura D is that a smitii? very nice. got any close ups? they look very similar to N. Wennerae

For those who want a mantis:

1. Head to RC's mantis forum. Over the course of any given week I have noticed about 3-5 mantids traded there.

2. Don't pay that much (liveaquaria link) for a mantis, even a peacock.

3. N. Wennera is really easy to acquire, is hardy, and stays small (less fun but is easier to design a tank around since they don't break glass etc). ... TBS live rock is farmed in the gulf. Wennera live in the gulf ... i simply located someone who had just gotten TBS rock and that's how i got the wennerae. and i wuvs her. i just set her up a new tank 5.5g and as soon as its ready you can have some pix!
