Do you mean their standard fluorescent bulbs? I hope not because those are NO bulbs which will make it very difficult to keep any corals. Anyway, you can mix different bulbs in different fixtures.

i guess not because i didnt realize that until i went to the site. horay for me becuase i really got the knowlodge of reef lighting down yesterday. i was also looking at some other hardy softies like zooanthilids, i think thats how u spell. the carpet haddoni and some other things.has ne one ever heard of the blue spot puffer fish? again horay for me. also should i use 20000k bulbs with mushrooms? i want to get a high wattage of lighting when i first start out so that when i get harder specimens to keep ill already have the lighting i need, like for that carpet or bta.

250w double ends have the same output of 400w bulbs? then why does anyone use 400w bulbs if they can get the same thing for cheaper?

Also you need to have a UV shield when using these HQI lamps, correct?

Double-end fixtures, bulbs, and ballasts are more expensive than moguls. Also, it's a bit more complicated to DIY compared to single-ends.

It's imperative to have the UV shield.

no, it isn't

the uv output of a halide doesn't come close to natural outdoor levels, and most of it is absorbed by the time the light has gone through the first inch or so of the water :)

JustReefit, I don't think I have ever seen/heard anyone ask so many consecutive questions. I think you should earn an award. :D

450 watts for what size tank? anenomes, clams, sps, etc. take a lot of light. and you also have to think of what you want in there -- mushrooms are cool but they go everywhere unless you are careful. anenomes will, too, though in a different meaning to the word.

At least for me, when I sit down to think about a tank, I have to consider the whole scheme. Do I want sps/lps? Do I want clowns/anemones? How 'bout softies? It's all your preference, man. Some of the animals you listed require a skill aquarist and a rock-steady stable tank with good parameters, minimal change, and high flow. All of those equal lots of time, effort, and money.

I guess what I'm saying here is to first consider your tank size. Looking back over the post, I see that various tank sizes have been mentioned. First, start with that. Then think about $$$ -- lots of people use the 30-50 rule: You will spend $30-$50 per gallon on a reef tank to set it up right (over time, not neccesarily all at once).

Hope this helps a little (in the philosophical sense, cuz it isn't really helpful in answering some of your questions! )

i think ill go with the 90 gallon tank with pine cabinet stand at my lfs.
16 1/2"(w) x 25 3/8" (h) x 48 1/2" (l), for $350.00 and its already drilled. :) :D 8)

Sounds like a plan. What do you mean by 450W of light? Is that MH? 20000K bulbs are pretty blue, but it is mostly a preference issue. That's one of those topics you should research to see what you like.

Well, you could probably keep a yellow in a 90, but only if there are no other tangs. I'm setting up a 180 and wouldn't put a naso in it, they can get to 18". Keep in mind that in general tangs don't mix very well, especially in smaller tanks.

so what size tank are you saying would be good for a naso? my lfs said a 75 would be ok for a naso. call me crazy or should i go with a 200 jus kiding. (one d or two)? my naso wont come untill later on, as ive said my first fish will be two false percula. i was lookin at a site and i decided that i liked the false percula better than the true one. i want them to become a mated pair so i should get them pretty young as ive heard. can clowns take really intense or does it matter. i really want to get everything in the begining and not have to worry about upgrading anything for awhile, does that sound sensible? i know ill be saving forever but im getting a job hopefully this summer. maybe at my lfs, but they are family owned so who knows, theres a petsuper market i may try. are their products any good? ill just try the website.

Arg means that a naso will NOT go in a 75. Don't listen to your LFS anymore, please. They just want you to buy something. If you find a good LFS, fine, but that one is not good. 200 would be the minimum for a naso in my opinion. Imagine an 18" fish trying to swim in a 4' tank that is only 18" front to back. It won't work. Plus, tangs have to have swimming room. Have you ever seen that Acura commercial with the tang swimming back and forth in the tank? Well they picked a tang because they look fast because that is how they evolved. Sorry to dwell on the issue, but even a small one will not last more than a few months.

I'm confused... Anyway, smaller ones will probably pair up best, but you could always buy them already paired for a little more too.

Do you mean the "petsuper market?" What kind of products? That's kind of like asking if Walmart sells good stuff. Sure, some of it is great, but some of it isn't so great.
