Sorry, checked my source on the thinking about killing the tuna story and it turns out to be unreliable. Sorry for the confusion.

The molas were sweet. I didn't realize how fast they could move! They get those little fins moving like a triggerfish. The two they have are probably only like, hmm, 3 feet long or so? Righty?

Oh, Oh, I was also told that they wanted to kill the big bluefins because they couldn't catch them and are scared they will kill the white but the AZA won't let them. Go AZA!

Why do you hate fish food so much?

Would you object if the salmon they were feeding the white had been on display before being killed and filleted?

And those tuna aren't really large! Fishermen used to catch 1500 pounders with regularity - they are called the Lions of the Sea.
They won't kill them. I have some problems with the AZA regarding trafficking outside of its affiliates, but they do a good job of protecting animals.

There is an ocean pen breeding program for Giant Bluefin stock enhancement going on in Japan right now. The Japanese market will pay more than you would for a luxury automobile for one of those fish. To hunt them, they use spotter plains and electrified hand thrown harpoons to pick out the biggest of a group. The harpoons are electrified to keep the fish from bolting and burning all that precious oil.

Got a link handy to the ocean pen breeding program. Heard about it a year or two ago and haven't been able to find anything about it since.

(BTW I am watching cuttles have sex right now)

Sure don't. I remember talking to Sylvia Earle about it a while ago, apparently it's been successful so far.

Really? On the little nifty cards they gave us at the aquarium, bluefin tuna was on the "Avoid" list of fish that you shouldn't eat. Other types of tuna were ok IIRC. Salmon was on the "Good" and "With Caution" lists, based on whether it was farmed or wild, how it was caught, etc.
