Yah, that ones a bit pricy, although, around here, they are going for $75 a polyp for a lessor coloration. I've seen large colonies go for several thousand. Just another fad, you know, like rose tip bubble anemonies?

Does this coral have a "common name"?

It goes by the latin, although afficianados will often refer to the members of the genus just by the species name.

, I don't get it either. These things just seem like glorified Favia's to me. Not sure about the rare thing either, as the genus is quite common in the wild. I guess if you label something rare that's easy to keep, people will flock to it.

.....why would you pay that much for a coral that isn't that spectacular looking? There are PLENTY of other colorful corals out there that are a fraction of the price.

ding,ding,ding....except it will take a little longer to flood the maket with these...
But, some people love these coral's, then you get the rest who just want to be the first on the block to get one or ten...

I wouldn't mind having a frag or two, but can't see paying so much for a colony. i might pay for a polyp to try and grow it out, but even those are $70-100+ each. 8O There are some really awesome morphs out there if you look through people's galleries. Prices will probably eventually go down, since they're apparently hardy and good growers, but for now it's the latest, expensive rarity. If you found a big colony, and had about $1.5K laying around, you could probably actually frag the thing out and make some money, but that's if you've got $1.5K to spend on corals. Not I...

I dunno, I have a few frags in my tank that I paid $50 for and that were teeny. Couple of years later and you have something pretty special.

Acan's have been shipped for years under Favia/Favites common names. CITES only allows like 2k a year, so they're always going to be a limitted wild item, although captive stock could do something to avalability in the states shortly.

Silly. This is the reef tank equivalent of having a little polo horsey on your shirt or a swoosh on your shoe. They look just like any other damn LPS coral from 5 feet away.

If you really think THIS coral....

...is 10 times prettier than THIS coral, you've lost your mind.

I don't see lordhowensis coming down in price anytime soon, Matt.

:P

Peace,
