we will see what the general consensus is and work from there.

for those that haven't been following this discussion, the worry is that some will have an advantage in this contest by having more funds at their disposal.

there are also worries that limiting the funds will also limit the creativity aspect of the contest.

Some consideraton should be included for a less expensive system that is equal to more expensive systems.

I think it should have a limit, but not a flat dollar amout. The limit should be $ per gallon.

Gee I thought I was clear

Consider 2 10gs with the same livestock. one cost $100 to setup and maintain for 6 months the other $1000. Seems to me the $100 setup would be better.

Or say two tanks that cost $500 for 6 months. Both with similiar livestock. On is a 10g the other a 55g. Seems to be the larger tank at the same cost would be better.

Now how you implement that in the judging can be a problem.

I don't know if anyone has asked, but would maintenance costs (water, salt, food, etc.) be included in the budget?

There needs to be a spending limit on equipment. No more than $500. This includes the tank, lights, and filtration.

I think it would be a good idea if all tanks were of the same size, 10gal. and used the same types of equipment. Power heads for circulation and skimmers and no more than a 70watt mh plus what ever supplemental you choose. You shouldn't be able to upgrade equipment after set-up with the exception of lighting.

Some equipment shouldn't be allowed.

This way, all tanks would be created equal. Regardless of the cost of the different pieces of equipment.

That has merit. There needs to be someway to turn this into some derivitave of a stock car race.

I thought we already determined this in the other thread? IMO there should be nospending limit and just a track of expenses. Price of tank would then be taken into account at judging time.

Hey, look at it this way, Plant Life Bob's intank refugium counts as creativity too! Although it's ugly as hell in my opinion, but you have to admit it's a very creative thing to do.

Disclaimer: Danmhippo is in no way promoting adding plant life as a cure all solution.

No limit, just track expenses. Then we can debate the best tank later.

Not like we're EVER going to agree on one particuar tank anyway!

Pod, Make the rules and we'll stick to them. I (we) think you're more than capable of setting up a fair contest. You thought up the idea, so you've got administrative rights in my book.

Pod, Why edit the post? I don't think you've offended anyone more than I did.....

Anyway, we will all follow your rule, whatever it will be. It's your idea, you deserve the credit.

You also need a "sign in by" date. Give the cutoff like the end of Febuary or something, do a head count, and then hit it in the head fred.

Would be cool for another forum in the index called "RDO buildoff" or something and make stickies with each contestants names, something like below. (forgive the photoshop) granted there will be like whole page of stickies depending on how many people participate. I would leave the sign in sheet stickied in the general board and just lock it after the start date has passed. Or just start a new one every year. I think it would be a great teaching tool, that way you will be able to see what everyone does from start to finish, what worked and what didn't. (and if bob's plantlife thing, tapwater, and no water changes works.)

I am for the "track" expenses option and I do think that judges should take the "most bang for the buck" into consideration.

BTW Pod, quit worrying you're doing fine.
