When I started my first reef about 15 years ago, there didn't seem to be many women in the hobby. I would go to stores and the people would talk to my boyfriend (now husband) usually ignoring me. Now I am noticing more and more women on the boards, especially the newbe boards. I've never made it to any of the reef clubs. Are there more women joining or am I just noticing them more?

I have nooooo idea. The only ladies I ever see at the fish store seem to have been dragged there by there spouses, although there are a few in the local reef club.

I don't know either, as we have no reef club. But I can tell you that around here, the women aren't dragged to the lfs, they go willingly and get a "say so" in the purchasing!!!! We also have of a lot of "his and her" tanks running.

his and her tank??? that sounds like a recipe for divorce around my house. My husband is an impulse shopper at the LFS, given control, the tank would be filled with inappropriate fish and all the latest cool gadgets. :)

It works best in our house if it's MY tank unless OUR tank needs a large water change or electrical/plumbing work.

They are all MY tanks too. Even when it comes to the plumbing. He helps with the carrying of the water sometimes but it pretty much all me for the maintenance and care. Fine by me since I do it for a living too.

My reef club has many females who "Clean the tank" in the relationship.

:D I guess I'm lucky in that both of us like the tanks, although he only cleans the glass and helps with water changes. Oh, yeah, he does write checks at the LFS too ;).

My tanks, are mine. No one touches them.

Also, I don't treat female clients as "the girlfriends", since most of them have a say in what's going on, even when they let the boys to the talking.
You can learn to read the body language quite easily. Most people will let me know their interest by either acting bored, or paying attention. Sometimes it's the women, sometimes it's the men. I learned long ago not to make assumptions based on sex. Much to my advantage :)

Personally, if I'm shopping with my hubby and a sales person were to walk up and address him and ignore me, we would end up going to another store. Sales people need to be a bit more intelligent than that if they want MY money. Fortunately, I live in a city that is well known for being open-minded, and I really can't remember ever having to deal with crap like that here. Smart city.
Interestingly enough, every time I visit my family out West, I can find endless acts of chauvinism there. No idea why, but there is SUCH a big difference in mindsets between Montreal and Calgary that it would be funny if it wasn't so frustrating.

I agree, I don't get ignored in the stores anymore but then the stores know me.

My husband is a good foot taller than me, so it's easier to let him do the water changes. I have to get a latter every time I want to put my hand in the tank!

Unleashed, how is the weather in Montreal? I have a friend who just moved there l from the Philippines. She says it's beautiful but VERY COLD!

You should live in Georgia :)

haha seriously, my wife goes with me most of the time when I'm gonna make a purchase for my tank .Even though I do all the work and make the purchases it's still really OUR tank. I think she sees it as the most expensive conversation starter in the living room or somthing. I know if she had to though she could take pretty good care of things from just being around the lingo and watching things go on for so long. I mean out of 100 wifes ... or husbands for that matter, how many can explain the "ins and outs" of osmosis... or how a protein skimmer works, or how many know the proper salinity and SG (as related to temp) for a reef tank?! Not bloody many :)

Have a good one!

Why is that so few people's significant others post on these boards? There has got to be some couples who are both equally interested in the tanks.

Reef Sufferage?

My tanks are mine too. My husband/kids really don't care much about them, but often go to the reef store with me and endure countless boring conversations with me about my tanks.

The tank started as a treat for my 2 daughters for xmas. It was supposed to be a simple frshwater tank. Lo and behold, we went to the aquarium, and so it became the family tank, as we saw the reef set ups, and everyone was excited to go in that direction.
Well, fast forward a couple of years! Im the only one who does anything in the tank anymore as far as maintenance, but everyone stil loves it. When I take my kids or my wife to the aquarium, everyone has a say. They all take turns feeding and help me reefscape. My older daughter helps with water changes.
My wife loves to show it off when we have people over, and my kids do that as well..."look, its nemo!"
So I guess in relation to the post, my wife loves it, but she wouldnt go by herself to pick something out. So i have 3 lady reefers at home, but I do pretty much all the work....

It was hubby who got us into the hobby. We started with one 120G tank. It was considered 'his tank' I guess, although we both decided together what was going to go into it. He was in charge of the water changes and the initial set up, upgrades to lights etc. I have always done the research, chemistry, feeding - all the day to day stuff. That all started three years ago. We have 5 (4 fresh, 1 reef) tanks now, with another one waiting to be set up as FOWLR. We refer to the tanks as 'mine tanks - your tanks', but they are all mine if you ask me  (just kidding, he looks after the water changes on his, I look after mine). When we walk into the LFS store I have never been treated different than hubby, but then again most of them now by now that I could tell them more about what's happening in the tanks than dh. I just bring him along to pay the bills!
