By the way I picked up a little tiny ora maxima today from Ronen. This one I definitely have to feed. I have the ESV dried phytoplankton, is this good enough?

The pic I took of the clam is not a whole lot better than the one Awilda took...should have bothered to look at the pic before I left there...duh.

Question here..I know little about clams but do recall hearing that clams less than 3" should be fed, is that not correct?

I did the FWD as told. Adjusted the temp. & PH used ro/di water. 45 min. dip, burped the baby while placing it back in the tank. Put it on a rock at the bottom of the tank. The lights had gone off by then.

About two minutes later I looked, and it was covered by about 10 nassarius. I immediately picked it up, but they had already eaten half of it.

I don't know anything compared to you guys, but honestly I feel like I should have followed my instinct and left it alone.:sad2::sad2:

Based on the photos that KathyC posted, that clam would have died shortly in any case. Based on what I've read, untreated Pinched Mantle disease will result in death. Sorry

The exact cause of PM is still being determined. There have been many reports that it is contagious. Since untreated PM will result in death at some point, you shouldn't consider attempting to cure it and failing....killing it.

I don't think they are any definitive answers to these questions yet. That's why so many people donated funds to clamsdirect.com, to sponsor laboratory testing on afflicted clams.

to keep it real simple you can look pm on a clam to ich on a fish, your other clams may be just fine and not get any pm at all. you did what you needed to do, just rember dealing with clams is like a crap shoot.

Thanks a mill clamcrazy. So, should new clams be qt like fish? I was wondering of another possibility. Could a shrimp annoy a clam enough to kill them?

I believe i read it somewhere that shrimps can bother clams. But double check on that.

Dean, I wasn't suggesting that the shrimp caused PM.

I just didn't want to start another thread. Especially since we are not 100% certain that the clam had PM. My pics were lousy, and before I FWD it appeared to me and Kathy to be on it's way to openning normal.

My question still stands. Can shrimps bother a clam so much to the point of them dying?

i belive yes that a shrimp can cause enough stress to a clam to kill it, i think i have lost a few clams to those shrimp in the past. one maxima i had a while back the shrimp kept picking at it and the clam died in just a few days, after that i got all of my shrimp out of my tanks and my clams like it much better with out them. and yes that was PM you had there, and it is always best to QT all new additions to your tank.
