Waikiki has an outdoor reef tank or maybe even a few as far as I know. The idea has always been something I would like to do however the view is less than desirable and cleaning seems like a huge task. It would cut down on the lighting cost by 100% but I feel to do it right other costs may go up as far as insulation and excavation (depending on size of course but if you are going to dig a hole why not make it a BIG hole). Repairs would also be a huge headache unless you plan it out properly for all the "what if" scenarios.

I subscribed to that thread when I saw it, definite thinking outside of the box.
I would build it so one side was viewable, perhaps attached to the house. or if you want to get crazy one side seen through the house and another side seen through a pool. and then make it really big like lfs said
