This hobby sucks for instant gratification don't it? It's going to be another year before this thing gets close to its potential.

It is true. The golden brown diatoms that are covering the bottom and half of the rock is not all that photogenic.

I did stain the trim molding this morning and it looks really good. I'll post pics once I finish painting the wall and the base molding at the floor. That might get done this weekend.

That looks awesome louey!
Thanks.

and

How soon until fish and corals start going in?

Water parameters are perfect already, but the liverock is still making such a mess I probably won't be stocking any time soon. I want the rocks CLEAN before I start stocking. I'm going to keep scrubing them until they are clean. Don't know how long it's going to take.

Wow, I joined up at just the right time! I'm considering my first saltwater tank and as with most things, I'm gonna jump into it in a big way right off... don't get me wrong, limited budget will make it a long time coming, but it WILL happen, thanks Louey and the others for some good advice, pics, and most of all, inspiration!

OMG! Louey! It's absolutely gorgeous! Just incredible! I love it! Mind if I drool over your tank and periodically re-check this thread for inspirational purposes?

Thanks! My old 75G reef will eventually become the refugium to this tank. Once the new tank cycles, I will start to move the livestock, then tie the old tank into the new tank, then start macro's in the old tank. It'll probably be two months before the old tank is transformed into the fuge, maybe longer.

The skimmer is a DYI beckett that I made in the MACO course that used to be offered. I think a new course is planned in the near future, though I'm not sure what the couse students will fabricate this time.

Hey Louie, I just scanned thru this thread. Great job on your tank, it is going to be a beauty. I just wanted to add a couple things.

The drains on your sump are awesome, I had the exact same idea a few weeks ago when I built my new sump, what a sweet deal. Mine is on a smaller scale, but same idea.

Are you still using clear vinyl tubing on the output of your pressure rated pump? If so please replace it, as that crap is well known to split and will blow water everywhere. At the very least use the vinyl that has the fiber glass reinforcement.

Anyway I hope you don't mind my inputs, and I think it is time for you to update this thread! :D

Thanks bit t.

I am using vinyl tubing on my returns, but the returns aren't under any pressure, so I didn't think I needed pressure rated tubing just because the pump is pressure rated. I used vinyl tubing for the return line on my 75G for 5 years without incident.

It would suck if it did split, that's for sure.

I am going to use that velocity T-4 pump you see in the center picture to drain the sump when I do W/C's. I bought that pump a few years ago but didn't like it because it adds heat to the water. Now I have an application where that won't matter :D

Louey!!!! your so busted!!!
you sold me a pump that adds heat to the water?

I suppose it might not in the application Im planning for it, closed loop.. I hope anyway.. :P

Doh! I don't recall noticing any appreciable heat added to my tank when I ran that pump on my beckett skimmer for a couple of weeks.

I guess it must have or I wouldn't have written what you quoted above.

If the pump adds heat to your tank and your not happy I will accept the pump back and give you your money back, deputy dog! ;)

just razzing ya buddy..

Im sure in a closed loop will give the pump the least amount of stress thus letting it run as cool as possible.. no worries here.. :P
