I have algae growing in my tank, that is not a problem, doesn't bother me, because I know exactly what is causing it.

That is not what is stumping me

What is really getting me curious is this. I have brown algae that covers the sand on top of my DSB in places. For the last week there have been these white piles of sand growing out of the algae. I can't for the life of me figure out what could be doing it.

I have 2 chalk bass, 1 longnose hawkfish, and one bicolor blenny.

It really seems like something underneath the sand is pushing up and forming these piles.

Very strange.

Since my description of the whole thing probably tells you absolutely nothing, here is a picture...

Hey, since you responded Mr Mohr, That Orange and white Conch I asked about a while is definetly dead, in fact it is sitting on a rock and it hasn't moved all week.

Anyway, it really looked mostly empty when I picked it up the first time, although there was a little bit of something in there.

They don't leave their shells do they?

The conch isin't currently burrowing under the sand and sticking a periscope up and looking around for its shell is it?

tell me that's not possible will ya?

:D

I am gonna say it is AIF forces fortifying there positions in your tank for a spring offensive against the forces of good. But that's just my guess. Probably something fish related though.

:D

There is another one of them today

Maybe one of my fish is repeatedly picking up sand from the same place.

Oh for Gawd's sake. You won't cut a coral and you won't poke your sand. WTH???? Are you really a man or a are you a wussy girl? :D It's not the conch. Hermit's bail out of their shells. Snails and conch's don't. Your conch is dead. It didn't slime out of it's shell looking for better digs. Snails and conch's don't do that. :D You have USP's in your tank and you can't investigate further? (unidentified sand piles ;))

POKE THE DAMN SAND MAN!! If it stinks, you know the sand bed is in trouble.
