From Grand central station you can take metro north (Stamford Line) to the Greenwich CT Train Station and take a taxi to Greenwich Aquaria, or if it's a nice day you could walk there too.

One thing that has always bugged me is that in the Greatest city in the world we do not have a SINGLE decent local fish store. (I dont list NWA on my list because I will never do business with them again)

It is sad that we have to drive out of the city that never sleeps to find good shops.

Depending on what time of day you'll travel, it's right around two hours.

Thanks for all the responses, but I'm a bit confused. A couple of posts earlier, I read that it would be a 15 minute train ride from Madisson Square Gardens. Now I read 2 hours. Anyone want to clarify?

The two hours sounds about right. You'll probably make it from central park to 34st in 15minutes and from there it will take at least 20-30 minutes before you reach the beggining of long island

I see the confusion. It will take you about 15 minutes to get from Times Square to Penn Station(where you catch the Long Island Railroad).

Once you catch the Long Island Railroad train, the train ride from Penn Station to the aquarium is about two hours.

ETA; Penn Station is right next to Madison Square Garden.

Then of course if you go to the heliport on the east side, you could charter a helicopter to take you there, then a limo to the fish store.... that might be a few couple of bucks... but it beats the commute. imho
(I spent the whole weekend building a deck, I might be suffering from some minor heat stroke or something)

:)

If you are in Long Island, may be a trip with Paul B at the local shores is more interesting then visiting the lfs here HAHHAHA

That sounds good to me, but the shores in Canada have the same life. Actually this year all of my weekends are booked but I will be retiring in 23 weeks (who's counting?) Next year I may be able to take people on collecting trips. May be.
I walk from Times Square to Penn Station almost every day, I walk all over Manhattan almost every day (my feet hurt) :irked:
I am a construction electrician there and now I work for a small company so we do a lot of smaller renovations as opposed to new construction, so I get around a lot. (for 23 more weeks anyway)
It is about an 8 minute walk fron Times Square to Penn Station. Once there, go to the information booth and ask about the trains to Riverhead. Just ask any one of the 500 police and National Guard there for the information booth. The Riverhead Aquarium is very nice. I think it is about $25.00 or so to get in. It is a private aquarium. The New York Aquarium or Coney Island aquarium as most New Yorkers call it is also nice and much closer and cheaper. You could actually do both.
Fish Town is in Queens and harder to get to by train, much harder as you also have to take a bus. Unless of course you rent a car then it is about an hour from Grand Central depending on traffic, (could be three hours):letitallo
Fish Town is the oldest aquarium I know of, I helped start their salt tanks in the sixtees. They have a large assortment of more unusual stuff. They are their own importers so they are cheap. Firefish $7.00 etc.
You sometimes have to watch the quality though. There are no good aquariums in Manhattan unfortunately.
If you get to Atlantis Aquarium you will be at the beginning of wine country on Long Island. You should go to the aquarium in the morning then take a trip a few miles to the 20 or so wineries there. Most of them have wine tasting and the places are beautiful. Then a few more miles out is the town of Greenport. A nice quaint fishing town with small shops and really good restaurants. It is hard without a car though.
Enjoy your trip.
Have a great day.
Paul
