I'm curious what people's evap rate is. I guess pertinent information would include:
Tank Size?
Use of skimmer?
Open or enclosed top?
Circulation system?
Location?

FWIW: The reason I ask is I just plumbed my skimmer and it seems my evap went skyrocketed. I checked for leaks and couldn't find any, but this is plumbed through my wall to my outdoor chiller, so the paranoia in me keeps hinting that I may have a leak in the wall. But two things to consider: 1) my old 120g was using this same in-wall plumbing for close to 10 years, and 2) When my contractors came over recently to reinforce my floor, they did not mention anything about visible water damage. I think I'm just being paranoid :P

If it was leaking and you were replacing the water with fresh water then your salinity would be dropping.

My 1,750 gallon system evaporates around 10 gallons per day in the winter and 25 gallons per day in the summer when I use fans for cooling.

len skimmers increase evap because of the air injection. ( also how much gunk you removing daily)

Thanks for the input thus far.

Nate, good point on the salinity. My old tank did not have salinity decline over 10 years, so it's probalby not a leak unless I somehow damaged the existing in-wall plumbing during my upgrade. I guess it's just evap. Without lights or fans, I'm evaping about a little over a gallon already. With lights and fans, I'm sure I'll hit about 3 gallons. My tank is 176g or so.

Hey Guy, I had no idea you had a 1000 gallon tank!

Hehe. The percentage rates of evap are all over the map (by magnitudes of 10s and 100s!) :P

Tank Size? 72 gallon bowfront
Use of skimmer? Yes, the dreaded Seaclone...
Open or enclosed top? Open top
Circulation system? Powerheads, skimmer and HOB filter for media
Location? Livingroom

Evap is about 5 gallons per week in winter and maybe 2 per week in summer... probably worse in winter since furnace running and air is much more dry. :? Usually the skimmer removes as much salt w/ skimmate as evap removes fresh since salinity stays even at all times and I can just mix new saltwater to add at any point to bring the water level back up.

Tank Size -- about 70 gallons total
Use of skimmer -- Remora Pro
Open or enclosed top -- Open top, and open topped sump
Circulation system -- closed loop with Iwaki, and a smaller pump for my return
Location -- Living room, with forced air heating/cooling

About a gallon a day on average, forced air heating really dry's the house out.

I have hot water heating, which doesn't really matter since I control the humidity.

The variables in this hobby could drive a person crazy :D

about 1/2 gal per day in mine... 72 gal + ~8gal in sump system. I rigged up a floater switch to activate a small aqualifter pump to replenish from a bucket of fresh filtered water mixed with kalkwasser and iodine. I used to replenish by hand but found adding the large volume of high ph water could ph shock some sensitive inverts, same with adding iodine once a week. Now it replenishes a little at a time all day long, keeping the ph and iodine levels constant, the inverts look happier :)

I think that tank size is the biggest variable, but how would abient room temp figure in.

My house stays at a very confortable 77-79 all year except when I open the windows 8O

90 gal, ER skimmer, 2gal/day. I really didn't notice an increase in evaporation rate when I started the skimmer. If I were you, I'd be worried. I'd try to turn the skimmer off to see what happens...
