Hehe. I think it's a sponge. Hard to tell without seeing it in person or feeling it though, but it does not look like cyano to me.

Can you brush it off and siphon it easily? I haven't encountered any cyano that wasn't easy to siphon out.

It comes off if I scrape it (like with a coat hangar), but it's very "velvaty" to the touch, and it comes off in one clump.

Here's another pic if it.

If you can blow it with a turkey baster I vote for cyano. If not, for a sponge.
M.

I definitely can't blow it off with a turkey baster.

Hate to say it, but it sure looks like cyanobacteria. Cyano comes in many forms and I've seen this heavy velvety variety in many aquariums. If you can siphon it out, and I suspect that you can, then its cyano.

OK, if I blast it with a baster, like full force, it doesn't move one bit. I have to take a coat hangar to scrap it off, and even then it's pretty tough.
I can take more pics if you need them too.

It is not cyano then, and not other pics are required. If some other pic should be supplied, it would be of that strange "new" strain brought up by GSchiemer.

Need a closer picture but I would say Haliclona sp. (Porifera, sponge).

Ok,
Here's a slightly larger pic before the lights went out for the night. But the bare spot is where I took a coat hangar and scraped it off.

Starting to look like a Dinoflagillate outbreak. I hope Len's right with the Sponge ID.

Ok, if it's Dinoflagilate, how do you get rid of it? or should I get rid of it? What eats it? Even if it's fine...it is starting to go all over....very very slowly, but surely.

I have that too...

Sometimes I pinch pieces off with my fingers and throw them down the sink.

I also have cyano elsewhere in my tank to compare it too :D

along with hair algae, green algae, brown slimy algae, and too many other algae's to bother naming...
