Even though you've backpedaled now, unless you ultimately plan to house that eel in a 500 gallon, 10 foot aquarium (at a minimum), you DON'T have the "abilities to house it." I just want to make this clear for anyone reading this thread that may think this is "cool," as someone already stated. This isn't "cool" nor recommended. This species should generally not be sold to hobbyists in the same way that juvenile sharks shouldn't be sold in the hobby trade.

I agree as I already stated how large I have personaly seen them get and
that this specimen is already to large for the 125g tank it is in now.

but it does look cool. ( ROCK WORK I MEAN!! :) )

Ethics of keeping a green moray aside, I noticed a nano I used to keep with a single small eel was crawling with bristleworms, mysids, and pods galore. It may as well be fish-less. I notice the same thing in my octopus tanks. If anything, larger predators are taking care of things like small crabs and pistol shrimp that will make a dent in small snail/pod/worm populations.

I like the idea, but I think that particular fish is a really bad choice.

Thats what i am saying. The shear size and bioload it would creat in the refugium if it were used as one, would destroy any real value as a refugium, other than copepods ( which will grow in stagnant saltwater).
But since it isnt being used as one no need to worry.

It really depends on what your definition of 'refugium' is, and what you want to use it for.
Traditionally, a 'fuge is a place to let pods and other itty bittys thrive without predation - 'refuge ium' :D . Recently, people have been using 'fuges to also grow macro as an additional filtration.

I have used them as algae scrubbers since the idea was 1st sent my way back in 98' by Leroy from Garf. Until then I had always used it for pod growth and such as well.

Even though you've backpedaled now
Not back pedaling, just clarifying. I am sure you have never left a post with an incomplete thought because you where tiered. I'm human and did.

unless you ultimately plan to house that eel in a 500 gallon, 10 foot aquarium (at a minimum), you DON'T have the "abilities to house it."

When did you see my fishroom and know WHAT I have the abilities to house.

This species should generally not be sold to hobbyists in the same way that juvenile sharks shouldn't be sold in the hobby trade.

As I said I AGREE, however this eel was out there and free for the taking. I believe I have the skill and space to keep it and will. Thanks

Rob,
I think what some folks have a beef with is that your post didn't initially fill us in with all that info. I think posting success with difficult species should always be done with the caveat that you tell us how you are doing it. Let us know you have a huge tank for it to go in. Let us know the eel gets 8 feet long. You may know all this stuff, but some don't.

I compare it to posting pictures of a carnation coral or a Moorish idol or an octopus without filling us in on how they are being kept and why you are successful. Without that knowledge, a lot of people who don't know any better might think "hey, I can do that too" which would be a tragic result of the post.

:D
