I have a place on shinnicock. Anyone familiar with the ponaqua (spelling) bridge. Anyone know what their doing. If so lets get a couple of us together and do it.I am guessing the best time is towards the end of summer. But I would like to practice in a few weeks.I will host.

Thanks Brian. That would be awesome. I think we'd get a super turnout.

LIRAs outing is usually in September. They collect somewhere in Shinnecock bay i believe. Ive heard great things about the rockaways but have never been there. I wouldnt even know where to go LOL On that note i just purchased a 17 foot by 3 and a half foot seine net to catch bait with and silversides for my tank. If this happens ill be more than happy to bring it! This is a great idea!

CB I believe that net is exactly what is needed, I know a real cool place under that bridge to do it. Only thing is I have never done it. I am going to snorkel around a bit to try to get the lay of the land. Definetly would like to have some enthuthastic friends to come w/me. I'm thinking weekends after the 4th...

If i remember correctly the tropicals dont make it up this way till late summer. Thats why LIRA does it in September. I missed every collection trip they had because of my schedule. Id be happy to lend you the net if you want to try it out one weekend when you go out there. The rental fee would be some fresh silversides LOL :) Heres a link on how to use the net, its at the bottom of the page. http://www.njmsc.org/Education/Lesson_Plans/Nearshore_Community_Sampling.htm

Back in the late 70's. when I was in grad school, I used to do seining on our field trips...one of which was Shinnecock. In late Sept, early Oct, we used to get all kinds of exotics in the seine...baby butterfly fish, trunkfish, grunts...all tiny babies, but really cute. Of course, nowaday's you'd probably get lionfish babies........take care, Eric

I have been to the rockaways there is alot of fish there I dive and the best and only time to dive there is 10 min on a in comming tide before slack tide you ride the current to the bridge dive there then ride the out going tide back to the beach I have never collected there did not have a tank then but there were many people collecting there. But be warned that there is a short window for this dive and the DEC knows that and many times they are there too check your bag as you exit the water, so if you have a short fish or endangered fish they will give you a fine!
