Hi,

I was wondering if any of you are using Herbie's method (instead of Durso)

and also directly feeding an external (recirc) skimmer:

I am thinking that for my main drain, it'll go something like:

bulkhead
gate valve (herbie's method)
T fitting
-> horizontal goes straight to sump
-> vertical goes into another gate valve and then to skimmer

Is that the right way to do it or should I be putting the "herbie's" gate valve on the horizontal pipe going to the sump?

thanks.

Dude, stop calling it the Herbie's method :P The gate valve choke was used LONG before any guy named Herbie decided to claim it as his innovation. Ask Matt ;)

Both ways will work, but I think putting the gate valve after the Tee (going to the sump) might be better. It would increase the water pressure feeding the skimmer side, and it would probably result in less turbulence in the pipe on the drain-to-the-sump side. So I'd alter the original plan and put the gate valve after the Tee.

BTW, I'm not clear about the "further away the ball valve ..." comment. What surging are you talking about?

What's wrong with "Herbie's method"? I don't know this for sure, but I think he was the one who pioneered the emergency drain which makes the whole thing actually reliable.

I ripped that pic from another site so I think that surging refers to feeding a skimmer when you use a durso or calfo.

I'm just afraid that HERBIE + feeding skimmer will be very hard to adjust and get right. I heard that HERBIE's method was very sensitive to any type of changes. ;)
