Lost my squamosa today. Have searched all forums yet could not find anything to help. Had this fellow for 3 years and grew from 5 inches to 12! I was really proud of this clam. Pulled it out today and took a look ... only thing I could find odd was some sort of lime green "pod like" thing swimming in and out of the shell (outside of shell). Could not really find anything obvious (no worms, rice size critters, etc.).

The clam had been getting doused with sand from my green wrasse lately, and this may have been a contributing factor. My other clams look OK so far, but am concerned this may be something that will spread. Any ideas? Thanks :(

Sorry to hear this Dan.
Tridacnids are fairly hardy creatures in captivity, and it's impossible for myself to anyone else here to say for sure what killed it unfortunately. Water condition are a possibility though, as is an attack from another critter.

The parasite that you should be concerned with ( pyramidellid snails) attack the clam at night I believe, so check your other clams with a flashlight after the lights have been off for a few hours.

Double check me on that one though, I kept clams for years but never had any issues -so my recollection of parasite issues regarding them is rusty.

Was there any other symptoms prior to its death? If it was being constantly being covered by sand by your wrasse, the clam could've possibly succumbed to a bacteria infection. I also wonder if it's possible enough sand got into its gill that caused some respiratory failure.

Is it possible that as it grew it outgrew the ability of your tank to feed it via crap and other particular matter? i.e. it starved?
