Well yesterday was sad. My son has had a tank set up in his bedroom for some time. He is 9 now and when he was 3 or 4 I got him a pair of clarkiis (sp?). In his tank he had a candy basslet, the pair of clarkiis, a yellow blue spot goby, and a hawkfish. Most of the fish had been in his tank for a year or two, but the clarkiis he has had for many years. They just started laying eggs a few months ago and were on a regular pattern with the egg patchs getting bigger each time. Well he wanted to play his PSP in bed the other night and the battery died, so he was trying to find a plug and un plugged his JBJ 29 gal HQI nano's wavemaker. His wavemaker just alternates the two return pumps. Well he never plugged it back in and since there was no flow left in the tank he lost all of his fish.

Most of his corals are fine but he was pretty sad when I was saying goodnight last night and noticed his dead fish. I think he learned his lesson on unplugging his reef equiptment.

:(

So sorry to hear that. Yeah, no flow can kill fish surprisingly fast. I had it happen during a power outage one, and now I always make sure there is flow (and backup for it).

Well a bit of good news. The one fish I didnt find was his yellow goby who I figured was dead in the sand somewhere. Well today I was rearranging his tank and the goby was swimming about. I think this made his day. We got him an ocellaris today and I think I might stick my small snowflake in his tank. I am not sure yet...

Won't the eel think the goby is a light snack?

Thank goodness something made it. It is sad when lessons are learned this way. I hate it when I lose an older fish, especially when I do not know why.

That's a real bummer; sorry to hear it!

But I guess OTOH it's a valuable lesson to learn, one which he won't soon forget.

So wait he unplugged the flow, or the airation. I didnt know flow was that important to fish  Mine dont fret too much when the power goes out-I put a bubble box on the tank and they just hover around it.

The only moray that ever bit me was a small snowflake. Made a really need wound, zigzagged like a lightening bolt. Bled like a mother, too. DOINK!

It's not the flow itself, it's that little to no O2/CO2 exchange can occur if there is no surface agitation, along with the problem in very large tanks that without current then anoxic regions can develop.

Yeah it was the lack of 02. The tank is a JBJ 29 gal, and the back partition has two maxijet 1200s for returns, so the back part is the sump. That is the only flow his tank has ever needed, although I am sure a powerhead in the tank wouldnt be a bad thing. Anyhow the two maxis plug into a wavemaker that pulses them back anf forth. The chiller pulls and returns water from the back partition. Once he unplugged the wavemaker and there was no return, it was trouble enough since that meant zero flow. But on top of that when the light turned on the next morning and we left for the day the tank probably heated up making any dissolved 02 from being able to stay in the water.

But I guess OTOH it's a valuable lesson to learn, one which he won't soon forget.

This is very true!
