Thanks everyone, like Bob, the main thing I'm worried about is having the stuff exposed to the tank water.

BC, I was thinking about that but the silicone pad I had under my hammerhead eventually turned yellowish which I took to mean that something broke down in it. Also it had some sort of filmy substance over it.

Right now I was leaning towards a natural gum rubber sheet from mcmaster.com. It says that its only made from fda-compliant materials.

Its tough knowing these things are going to be immersed in saltwater 24/7

Just because something is FDA compliant doesn't mean that it is toxin free and it certainly doesn't mean anything about the way it will react with salt water. The FDA doesn't test anything - they rely on the tests from the companies that put out the products. Most of those companies don't test for chemical interactions like we might see in salt water (considering all of the trace elements, phosphate sponges, bacteria, and all of that good stuff we have in there). All of that is just to say use caution when trusting a product that touts itself as "FDA approved". Might be fine, but it would be wise to research carefully.

I use filter padding folded over 2x. Mines still as clean as i first bought it and has alot of pods that made it their home. Used 5 months + too.

I would be careful with mouse pads. They break down in rain water. Scared to see what nutrient rich salt water does it it.

I would pull the mouse pads out of the sumps, I agree it's impossible to know what's in them. I like the filter pad idea Tony but does it cut down on the vibration enough? I have some pads I can try under my skimmer today, I guess I'll find out.

crox99, that was for external pumps! Don't use that silicone in the tank because I'm not sure if it will leach! It had some sort of film on it and eventually turned a little yellow for me. Outside under a sequence pump, thats great stuff but I wouldn't put it in the tank.

Paul, I have not put the pads under the skimmer yet, I was working in the sump yesterday and between all the other noise I could not here any vibrations coming from the skimmer, i'll try it out though.
