I think you are going to have to swap out the socket as well which means changing the electrical going to the socket as well.

No, No, and NO!!

It depends on your fixtures. Ice Cap DE pendants for example are designed with adjustable sockets so you can do just as you suggest. Most, fixtures, however, are not.
