I'm not going to try to calculate the electric savings, but with the bulb cost neutralizing the initial cost of the system then the electric savings would be the icing on the cake :eat:
What if you don't pay for electricity?

I never had anything 10 years without breaking itif I bought the 60" aqua it would cost 3,075 and last for an estimated 10 years.
in 120 months I would go through 13 bulb changes with 3 bulbs at a time, if the bulbs are 80 each thats 3,120 in bulb cost right there.

that is of course if the led bulbs last ten years, and the leds work to grow coral.
For anyone wanting to learn more about LED lighting. . .
A while back I did an interview with Tullio Del Aquila about LED lighting. Tullio developed the first LED aquarium application with the Marc Weiss moonlight. He is the most knowledgeable aquarist regarding LED lighting for aquaria and we discuss very specifically why LEDs are not ready for prime time, yet. The interview is available as a free download. It really is just a matter of time until Tullio is to LEDs what Sanjay is to Halides and other traditional aquarium lights.
Here is a list of items discussed in this interview
- Introductions
- how LEDs got started in the hobby
- Where LED moonlights came from
- Hi flux and low flux LED
- LED environmental requirements
- Details of LEDs wavelength output
- LEDs ability to target the wavelengths needed by coral
- Directivity of LEDs and how that affects there use
- Luminous Efficiency of LED, and comparison to other lighting types
- How LEDs work
- Columniation (Focusing) vs reflected light
- why aren't LED lights everywhere, what's the hold up
- LEDs do not emit UV, how will that affect coral
- Thoughts on Commercial LED fixtures
