Canister Filters

So What actually causes canisters filters to become nitrate factories?

For example, I have an EHEIM Pro II, but my nitrates are high.

Is it the bio, mechanical, or the filter pads?

I can take it offline, but then it'll just be sitting it there. What else can I use it for?

the organic matter gets caught in the filter and decays. Eventually it turns into nitrates.

You can use your filter for carbon, for once-in-a-while polishing, or for circulation.

Do you know Where exactly in the filter (pads, bio media)? I figure if you put carbon in it, the organic matter will get caught in there as well?

You should take all the pads and bio media out that is where the nitrates are coming from, use carbon and change monthly.....

I think you can put live rock rumbles in there. I have read it works great for nanos.

Also remember that with any canister filter that if you have the power turned off on it for 1 hour or longer, you must dump the contents of the canister, rinse it out & then refill it.
In that period of time all bacteria in the canister will die due to the lack of oxygen.
