This is directly out of the mouth of the president of Tropic Marin USA. I spoke to him at the last MACNA down in PA. Tropic Marin and Tropic Marin Pro Reef, ARE THE EXACT SAME salt mix as far as chemical levels. The ONLY reason to ever use the Pro Reef over the regular is if you are having trouble keeping your Alk under control with kalkwasser or calcium reactors boosting it too high. I am posting this because I have seen several people ask for the Pro Reef after being sold it and told it is better. This is not a debate or an opinion, but directly from the company itself. If someone sells you Pro Reef and you are not having problems with your alk, they are taking advantage or have no idea what they are talking about. So now you know lol. With the $20 a bucket I just saved you you can go get that other frag you wanted and name it after me :wink1:.

:smash: Test it but i doubt that you would only need 1 part of the 2 part. I use it and the calc, alk levels are exactly the same, i have to dose both equally to maintain. Im definately not buying the pro again though. although the last tub i bought i payed the price for the normal one so....

Was there any info on why it helps with kalk dosing?

Ryan, the pro reef was designed more for the european reefers using all those different ways we have yet to hear about here in the states, to keep their calcium high and have problems keeping their alk down. The pro reef is designed to maintain a lower alk so you don't create such a drastic swing with calcium reactors or kalk dosing and such. It's supposed to be used only if you are having a hard time keeping your alk DOWN at the proper range lol. So you still need to dose.... or get a reactor. Chemically they are identical with the exception of the alk.

Thanks thats great info!

I've been using tropic marin pro-reef for at least a year and couldn't figure out why my alk was always tanking. I was reading like 2 meq/l after a water change before adding dKh buffer. Once buffer is added it stabilizes. I just figured it was being used up real fast. Never had a prob with calcium though (400-450 ppm) and don't use a reactor.
