"Dude" I defiantly am not missing the point. There is nothing visually pleasing about egg crate in a reef tank. Lets put it this way, let stop "decorating" our tanks with plugs and egg crate and start creating beautiful, thoughtfully laid out, and natural reef displays. This hobby shouldn't be about an ever-continuing science project. But about translating the amazing and unique reef world into our homes. I am acutely aware that removing these animals from the ocean in not natural, however we as reef keepers have a responsibility to recreate the best possible environment for the animals we keep. The best examples of this NEVER use egg crate, I'll mention a few successful and beautiful reef displays to prove my point

Defiantly no egg crate in any of those tanks, and I?m sure a whole host of others. Maybe you?re missing the point,
Lets make it Beautiful not just a functional science project.

I am not making fun but challenging people to step it up!

Eggcrate sure its an eye sore but I'm sure everyone, including myself, has something thats unnatural in their tank.

I'm sure most of the guys up there have some kind of rock supporting structure, whether it be acrylic rods or epoxy. Oh and more likely than not everyone's tank has a reefplug or two ;).

Creating something truely natural away from a reef in the ocean would mean having a biotope or else you're just throwing random coral in a tank which is by no means going for the natural look.

I personally use acrylic rods, a lot less invasive than egg crate. But I think you're taking this egg crate thing to a whole new level, its not that serious. To each his own, everyone has their own taste.

Can you put up some pics of your tank?

I don't know if that made sense but hell at least i responded :).

i totally understand that some kind of support structure is common. But I can tell you that most if not all (I don't know about JHale's tank) have no Egg crate in them. They use large rock instead of using lots of small pieces. I am not against using it for structure BUT you should never see it. as for Plugs everybody has some. If your a brave soul you break the coral off before you put in your tank. I think the results are worth it! How many tanks do you see with plugs all over the sand and visible egg crate stuck to the glass or on the sand for frags. If reefers would spend half as much time fussing over the asthetics and as we do about more GPH and which return pump is better egg crate would only exist in the basement of fish stores and we would hav emuch more beautiful reef displays.
I have gallery pics of my tank if you'd like to look

The only thing i really agree with is that we should provide a natural enviroment for our inhabitants

but lets be honest alot of people keep corals on eggcrate so that they can easily take em out to sell them

i only use egg crate as a top for my tank i think it is a great way tosee in your tank from above w/o fish or inverts poping out..

As for it looking like a science project you think about it the way to keep a stable enviorment for our live stock is to have all these stablizrs bio filters mech filters ro systems protien skimmers mh lights pc lights t-5 whatever it might look bad but seriously it keeps our fish and inverts healthy and it keeps them happy

What's wrong with science projects? I highly doubt that the fish care about aesthetics as long as their biological needs are met. 50 gallons is 50 gallons with or without eggcrate. Now if a person wants an aesthetically pleasing tank, then let that person do what pleases that person's visual senses- eggcrate, no eggcrate- who cares?

I think it serves it's purpose in more then a few places. I personally wouldn't be caught dead with it in sight of my main display and do use the stuff; but to each their own. I know a lot of people don't have the room for a huge tank but love the ability to grow out multiple frags of whatever while collecting the newest and latest thing; and for them egg crate it perfect.

Well, I don't get what u mean because the poeple i see using eggcrate are the ones with frag shelves in their displays (hate that) or using them to shade/cover the tank. I completely agree with you but if people are using it to store some frags on frag pegs then there is a reason and IMO eggcrate is the best option to do so. If your using it to build up your rock base shame on you......

Most if not all poeple who use eggcrate do so for the farming of coral. Ive yet to see someone make an eggcrate rock sculpture, besides masterswimmers wall-o-rock (which i <3 btw) and i don;t see him doing it any other way.

Hows the ferarri of fishtanks doing?

I use eggcrate on the sides only to grow out any small frags since I ran out of room and have nothing against it. I wouldn't put it in the middle of the tank ofcourse because its unsightly. Other then that, I have nothing against it.

hmm this is quite a debatable subject, i agree it should not be in the home aquarium unless you have tiny frags that require it to be closer to the light until they grow and in a store i believe they are acceptable too.. but other than that i dont think they appeal to a reef tank.
