Last night I had a blackout in my area for 8 hr`s thank god for my generator. Hooked up both tanks ( return`s, heater`s and skimmer`s) and watched a movie with peace of mind. Just a little reminder the summer`s coming and that is the time you are going to need a plan if the power go`s out. Don`t wait because if I did I think I would have lost a lot last night....

All you have to do is TURN OFF (very important) your house main breaker. Then just plug in the generator to any outlet. It'll backfeed the juice throughout your house. Be very VERY aware that if you don't shut off your house main when the power outage is repaired and juice flows from the electric company it'll blow your generator.

Also, the linemen from the electric company can be electrocuted if you have your generator running and your house main on. The juice will flow to where ever there is an outlet.....including a person working on the pole. They will normally shoot a large charge through the lines before they work on them to blow anyones generator thereby protecting themselves.

Risky business working as a lineman.

NO S***!!! Well that sucks! So, all you have to do is make sure your house's main is off while the generator is on? And since the house's main would be off, a lineman working on the lines would not zap the generator because its off? Am I on the right track? Cause me and electricity is like a marine having a beer with an insurgent. They just don't mix.

Correct. You'll have to look to see when the neighbors have their electric back on. Then you'll disconnect your generator. I would even shut the breakers for each circuit in the house. THEN turn on the house main. Once you see everything is kosher, then proceed to turn on the circuits in the house.

FYI: shutting the circuits in the house that you don't want to use when the generator is on will prevent overloading the generator. So when you shut the main, also shut the other circuits you're not going to use. Otherwise you'll have your outlets hot all over your house and might inadvertently have too large a draw on the generator.

thanks so much for explaining that russel :)
I definitely need to get one as well, was planning on getting the honda eu1000I generator since its cheap and i would not need more than 1,000 watts of usage. Power outages are really frequent i agree.

I was SO glad that nothing bad happened Tim and everything is 100%. When i looked at the topic i said to myself ,,, oh no not another member.. awesome! glad every things okay.

You're very welcome. Must remember, when you don't know how to do something (anything), it's always difficult. When you know how to do something, it's always easy.

Aaron, you're welcome too. BTW it's a double 'L' in Russell (for me anyway ;) )

Thank`s Aaron, I`m glad I got people to start thinking about this topic because if you are not prepared when it happens it might be to late to do anything......
