This kind of argument will keep on coming up unless we had clear definition of what are OFFERING or SELLING....
The offerer may be thinking this as a helping-out-fellow-hobbyist deal but the receiver may be thinking offering a cleanup service or a make money fast deal. So, it is best that we do it like we do business and save ourself some drama. The offerer offers an item at a price(could be zero in dollar) and stated the terms then expect no further. The receiver agreed to the terms and accepts the offers and expect no further such as warranty. If the terms are not proper then don't even try to bargain the offerer. In fact, I have taken care of an animal with explicit agreement that I will send the original owner) the pic of it once a while.
e.g.
I am offering my ~270G(some scratches) Tank FREE for whoever ready to pick up in FLUSHING and WILL NEVER SELL it in the receivers' life term and must keep it running for me to inspect once a month. Tank is to be taken as is and no warranty of any sort is expressed including possibility causing your floor to collapse or wetting your floor.
The receiver should look at all the terms and decide, can he maintain this supposingly help-the-fellow-hobbyist free large tank.
I always think when one put a price on an item, one valued the item to be that price unless explicitly specified otherwise. When I decided to give an item for free. I valued the item to be zero in value to me. I would not care if it goes to the dumpster or to a beautiful home especially, we are talking about hardware. When I left my old Brooklyn address, I had about 10 15 tanks left and the landlord made sure I hired a dumpster to dump them(i.e. I have to offer money to have someone remove my tanks.)
