This is important
If you have you have traded with any one locally then there's a good chance you have Red Bugs in your tank.

I was just made aware I have them first by stingnyc, and then by sollby.
At this point it's not important who got them from who, what is important is that people are aware of the problem and take the necessary steps to deal with it.

Unless you know exactly what to look for they can be difficult to see.
they appear as very tiny yellow, red, or orange spots. if you look close at your coral and see little colored spots moving then you have red bugs. and when I say small I mean really small, like smaller than a grain of sand small.

the only difficult part to curing your tank is getting the medication called interceptor. It's a pill for cat's and dogs to cure heart worm and is available from vets with a prescription. the online cost is about $33 for 6 pills. about half a pill will cure a 120 gallon size tank. it is suggested to dose the tank twice, one week apart. each time followed by a large water change. the downside to dosing is it will also kill all the hermit crabs in your tank. so try to get them out before you dose.

there is more to it than what I mentioned but those are the important facts.
I'll post some good threads detailing the treatment when I find them.

true, what I meant was if you have bought or traded any coral or rocks you could have inveterately imported either the red bugs or their eggs. the eggs could be stuck to anything.
I will edit my first post it is confusing
I don't have a pic right now, I'll look for one on the web, they are too small for me to get a shot of.

Also I believe there is a proper method for disposing of the Interceptor after use. People shouldn't just flush it down the toilet. It has to be mixed with bleach to be rendered safe for disposal.

you mean all the water treated with interceptor must be mixed with bleach?
when you do the water change of course.

I might get some from Shaun if he has enough left.

I really need someone to help me with all the hermit crabs I have.
I'm going to save as many as I can tomorrow before I dose the tank.

No, what I mean is if you are going to dip your corals individually, you should put bleach in the water AFTER you do the dips, but BEFORE you flush it down the toilet. Also, if you dose your tank, you should probably mix bleach in the water you are taking out before you flush it.

From my understanding, it is a powerful antibiotic, everything we can do to decrease the possibility of antibiotics leaching into our water system and possibly creating antibiotic resistant organisms is a good thing.

Shaun, can you chime in?

Josh, I think the best thing we could do for our reef community is do a huge group buy of interceptor. it should be mandatory if you want to trade or sell coral. I've heard to many stories of people getting red bugs lately, there should be no reason for this if everyone helps to stop the problem.
Before the next frag swap we should set everyone up with the proper medications to eradicate all the pests out there.
can we please set up a group buy we all should have at least one pill on hand.

Agreed!

Jonathan, I am going to work tomorrow and am bringing you an interceptor pill. Can you meet me somewhere on the upper east side around lunch time.

Josh your right! It probably should be neutralized before pouring it down the drain.

But its impact on the ecosystem will be minimal once discarded, though dilution effects.

In the greater scheme of things I worry much more about many other travisties commited to the environment on a daily basis.

Jonathan,

I would suggest you treat the tank 3 times. The 3rd treatment will help guarantee you get rid of all bugs, eggs and larva. I'm glad you caught them early. My tank was so infested that they actually ate holes into my corals.

The best precaution is to quarantine your corals for 3 weeks and treat them with interceptor before introducing them to your tank. I have treated my tank twice now and I realize that just an interceptor dip isn?t enough. Plus during the quarantine you can see what other cudies you might have (flat worms, nudis, etc).

I thought the same thing.
but the acro that the goby was sitting in started extending it's polyps when the goby was taken out of the tank.
bugs could still be responsible for some of it.
