JH,

Great idea :)

I think we should include in the project a questionaire that includes calling times and distance willing to travel.

Also, each participant should complete a production inventory of some sort that allows the person helping know what the system is, how it works etc so that the helper doesn't have to spend valuable time figuring that out in greater detail. They could spend that time diagnosing etc.

I know when I tank sat for a fellow reefer, the first visit, I spent about an hour or so figuring out the flow, mechanics, hardware, wiring etc. Inevitably, the tank I was sitting for had a power failure - glad I took the time to figure it out cause when I came in the second time, I was able to fix it within 5 minutes.

Anyhow, just my thoughts, I'll work on something that could serve as a guide and perhaps we can share it with the MR participants on this project.

Thoughts?

I agree that this is a great idea, but I can't imagine the logistics involved in distributing a "production inventory" to the person(s) "going to the rescue". :scratchch

In your example Jim, you "saw" the system prior to being called in. That, moreso than anything, was the saving grace. One way or the other, we need to strive to set up an "emergency alert system" :)

p.s. I think the spit worked...

I was thinking the same thing, everyone would have to diagram their tanks system.
I know if you asked me to do a water change on your tank it would take me a while to figure it out, even though I've seen your tank a few times.
things such as labeling all the plugs and power strips would be important as well.

I think the list should be in the tank stand or somewhere else easy to find.
it could be in a cheap plastic binder or covered in laminate,
or we could have custom binders or stickers with the MR logo printed to make them easy to spot.
Jim if you want to work on a list and post it that would be great, we could all make suggestions then, if it was standard it would be easier to follow in an emergency.

LOL Dean that is hysterical - so when you tell fellow reefers your tank is held together with spit and bulkheads you can say "It sure is"

About the Alert System - I was actually tank sitting - so, it could probably be shared in the following manner:

1) If you are tank sitting then the person you are sitting for can distriute the inventory for you to use while they are heading out on vac or otherwise. That will give you a once over before you actually get there and shorten the time for response.

2) If you are not tank sitting and you are on the list, the person going away (who is on the list) would have to alert all the members "on call" of his/her system and the inventory and distribute accordingly. This will put the burden on the person going away to make sure thier emergency contacts had the proper info.

3) if you were on the list, and a loved one (Missy) had to call someone, she would have a reference list to work from and start calling for help rather than relying on someone being online at 3 am. At the very least, that person can walk her through? or try to at least. Worse case, we can instruct the loved one to stir the tank until "we" get there.

Also, this is no guarantee and is only a voluntary alert system, so, no liability is on the person assisting in the event something really bad goes wrong.

Detaisl we can iron out too.

Whatcha think? Does this look like the shape of an agreement?

I think that you would have to differentiate between EMERGENCY (i.e. flood, power outage, etc) vs. a general downhill sprial in the tanks health. Both would be treated differently, IMO.

house that sounds good.
sollby, this is for real emergencies, not "why is my alk low can you come over and fix it".
house mentioned Missy, great example, eric was gone and the back of his tank cracked. that is an emergency. like house said the details will be worked out so everyone is on the same page.
also having a surplus of towels handy when you go away sounds like a good idea

This sounds awesome! I would definitley like to be part of something like this and am willing to help out local reefers. I think the diagram idea is great and should assist in figuring out the tank rather than just testing everything through process of elimination. But yea, my family and I are going away for 2 weeks, and I have to trust my friend who has a freshwater tank to take care of my reef. He did it once for 2 days, but 2 weeks. . .i doubt it, lol.

so far everyone said yes.

I believe everyone's tanks should be labelled and such even for themselves (nevermind an emergency). While it is important to have the house-sitter be able to call on a list of numbers in the event of a leak/power outage, etc. it may also make sense to get a "buddy" to be willing to stop by and take a look at the tank every couple of days (to notice things the house-sitter may miss).

For ex. if i go away, i can have my brother-in-law come by every three days to feed the fish and add water as well as any other basic tasks. perhaps once a week the "buddy" will come by and take a look if anything seems odd. The key with the emergency list is for the owner to first be contacted (if possible) to make sure there is indeed an emergency and second for the house-sitter to know what is normal. - once when i was away i got a frantic call "Albert, i dont know whats going on with your tank, but it is all clouded up" i told him to wipe the glass with the magnet and poof, crystal clear tank. i dont think we want 4am emergency phone calls to clean the glass.
lets put together a basic form we can all fill in (by computer, not by illegible handwriting) and leave with the tank for both the house sitter and for emergency response.

Ok, I will start.

I am willing to be a priority responder to Brooklyn and Midtown Manhattan. (secondary responder to Queens and Long Island and the rest of Manhattan.)

I will also be willing to do a "buddy check" for Brooklyn and Midtown Manhattan.

listings

thanks Albert,
that's exactly what I meant by emergency, could you imagine if you got there and the tank glass just needed to be cleaned, oy.

in breaking up the locations can you tell me how to divide Brooklyn, I know it's a big place, so it should get more listings, not just Brooklyn. also if people who live in the other boroughs could help out as well, that would help us match people up better.

the buddy system is a great idea as well, it should be an added option if your willing to go that extra mile :) otherwise just put yourself down for emergency call only.

Consider me "on call" for anyone on the site (hopefully the jersey guys have someone closer though ;)). I've already been through MSHUR's 150Gal splitting, and Chris's 4 halide ballasts shorting while he is overseas.

Only things is that I have a pretty complicated system to someone who hasen't used the same equipment. I would have to spend time with the guys on my buddy list explaining everything in person.
