I'm not that surprised, it's a great idea.
It covers your butt somewhat if your away and something does happen.
At least you know people have your back if the worst happens.

Is anyone even slightly alarmed at how many people responded that they would want to participate? This place rocks.

on another forum, i'd be amazed. but on manhattanreefs, as we always say, we are all like family. this is a much closer/tight-knit forum than most.

It's a great thing you guys are trying to do.
I'd love to participate but unfortunately this is what I do for a living.

I could help with emergency equipment like tanks, pumps, filters, ect.

Any other help you might need from a shop or you can always call me for advice. Unfortunately I can't volunteer my time.

I am totally into this idea

I wonder why! :P

Sean, I understand it's what you do for a living. But if someone -from the board- called you in an EMERGENCY you wouldn't help? Would be willing to meet someone at your shop at 2am and sell them a new tank?

Yes I would help with any supplies such as a tank, pump, filter ect. even at 2 a.m. I'm just saying I can't do emergency services for free.

So Manhattan Reefers have Aquatic Creations support.

i see his point. this is his job, if he does it for free, why would anyone pay him to do it. as a matter of fact, but setting up our volunteer system, we may already be recruiting potential customers from him. The difference is that with our system, you gotta volunteer yourself to be eligable to get help from others, while with a business, he helps you, but you do not return the favor, you just pay its worth. If sean is not planning to use the list for his own use when he is away, perhaps we could put him on the list but note that he does charge a fee to respond. this way the caller will still be able to contact him as a last resort (if desired).

just a thought.

. . . . . . .and in response to Albert - I think the list should include professionals who wouldn't mind the "do you have a Sequence or Iwaki pump in stock" at 2 in the morning.

Also, I think it will be clear that we are not setting up a maintenance network here, just an Emergency Response that can hold the tank stable until the owner (and perhaps hired maintenence professional) can get to the tank. Again, this is to hope to avoid complete disasters like we have often seen (Missy, Nick - I feel ya)

Hope that helps,

House

I've got no problems putting Sean on the list, if he wants that. I know everyone respects the fact that this is his business and that he will charge them for his help.
I don't think he will loose any business from our list, he might even gain some. worst case scenario your tank breaks and everyone else is away on vacation, who else is going to bring a new 120 and set it up for you? not that we want that to happen, but Sean would be a good resource to know about in those cases.
I know even if we did not have the list there are some people I would have called for help, no matter what time it was :)

good so we all agree. as was mentioned, there is the difference in a paid professional response compared to a volunteer. i dont think i'd have a spare tank to babysit livestock till the owner returns (if that was needed).

I think it would be great to have a list of folks with prop tanks or extra space where, if you had a serious tank failure, i.e. crack, crash, you could store your LR and corals until you have your system set up, kind of like a Red Cross for corals site.

Part of my fear when I leave for vacations is will my tank be fine when I get back. That has led to many DIY projects to simplify my setup. Unfortunately, every time I go away for more than a week, even though i have a very simple setup, they still seem to screw it up. I wonder if there are any LFS that would be good enough to set up some sort of an emergency service to better promote their business locally?

I'm in Hoboken, and work in Manhattan, so I would gladly be willing to help, even it that is on the DIY emergency repair side of things.
