well this is great.
I got home and found my bedroom much warmer than it should be,
my a/c had a malfunction.
this would not bother me but the a/c was the chiller for my QT where all my SPS are being treated for red bugs. the temp had gone up to 89, double crap. I turned off the lights and put fans on the water and floated some ice.
I'm cooling it down, slowly. it may have been at that temp for a few hours at the most. the normal temp of the tank has been 80.
how worried should I be for long term effects? has anyone had this happen before?

as for the a/c the metal grill where the air is taken in had frosted over, there was no air at all being sucked into the a/c. does anyone know what could have caused this? I noticed for the past few days the a/c was producing much more water than usual, I thought it was related to the weather. I let the grill defrost and turned the a/c back on so far after 20 minutes no frost has formed. Do I need a new a/c?

NO, it is typical when the humidity changes from really freakin humid, to not so humid. You might need to, however re-pitch the unit so that the condensation from the coil drains off and doesn't freeze where it did. What you did was right to do and the unit should be fine.

Your loss, if any, is a crapshoot - my guess is you should be fine, but that remains to be seen

guess what the filter was dirty, the units been running 24/7 I did not check it in time, my bad, damn.

thanks. I think the sps will all make. consider it an sps hot bath. I'll tell them it was good for them.

thanks Robert, I think they will be okay, the temp is back down to 80, so I turned the lights back on.
I guess I'll have to wait and see. SPS are tougher than they get credit for, maybe they won't mind the short temp. raise.

that's a cool chart Dean, but why are there so many blank spots?

also it's what your corals are used to, they had a 9 degree jump over several hours then back down. you have to hope they can handle that.

jon when the evaporator coil freeze or ice up it means not enoughf air is passing over the evaporator coil cause by dirty filter or dirty evaporator coil, when you use the ac 24/7 its a good idea to clean the filter once a week

that's exactly what happened. due to the heat the a/c was on for at least five weeks straight, I forgot to check the filter. :bigeyes2:
