medicating a fish only tank

People keep telling me that I should do some preventive medications to my tank to keep from getting sick. I have a 180 fish only tank.
I have live rock and sand. I see that there is medications that does not use copper and the there is copper medications.
Any help would be great.

You don't need to medicate a tank unless you excepting to have a high turnoff in fish, like a LFS would, where you would be bring in fish that you don't know what they have. There is no reason to treat a fish for some thing it doesn't have or even worst put medication into a fish tank.

If you quartine all your fish before you place them into the tank you shoudln't have any problems.

Also if you feed your fish a varity of different foods and make sure water conditions are good then your fish will be healthly and not be stress out, same goes for mixing fish together that wouldn't cause stress to the fish from fighting, this will lead to diseases, sickness and death.

there is no medication I would throw into a tank without the fish showing signs of any illness. If you keep the water clean and stable that is prevention enough. if there is a sick fish the best route is to take it out and cure it a hospital tank.
copper meds are extremely toxic for fish, the equivalent of chemotherapy for humans. to use them correctly you need to have very sensitive copper test kit. I would only use them as a last resort.
also if you do use copper with live rock it can never be used in a reef tank.

I think you'll find the consesus around here is to be very wary of advise from fish store employees. I have to agree with all the above re NOT medicating without a reason.

Almost all fish stores are looking to sell you thing and want you to have fish die, so you can buy more from them. They also want you to have problems so they can help you solve them and sell you more things.

All you need to do is quartine all the fish that you get and make sure your water conditions are good and your feeding your fish good.

David take it from me ,as an X-partners with Fish expo on corals and live rock ,do to the owners are azzes ,sold ppl anything and everything . they are there to rip you off and sell you anything ,thats every fish store ,usless you walk in and show them you know a hell of alot more than them on reef keeping/fish and prices ,,if you need any type of Info ,,This site is the way to go..Here on MR .we will never lie or tell you something dumb to do to your tank ,any Medication tht really works will kill off your live rock ,(i believe)use a qaurtine tank for your new fish and one that look sick if any in your tank,that the way to go ,
