the east river is not bad

no, if you read the reports about the water near jones beach and coney island they were not good, I don't have the links to them, but they were advising not to swim in the water. I'm not sure about NJ it might be okay there. near NY there were a lot of elevated levels of crap in the water. odds are you would be okay, it just grosses me out to know that I'm swimming or diving in sewage, sorry, i don't mean to sound like I'm discouraging you, i just want you to know what might be out there. I'll try to find the info for you.

Hits, not sure if it's too far south , but I was at Long Beach Island NJ about 4 weeks ago, and saw 12 atlantic white side dolphins surfin the waves about 20yrds off the shore. There were about 3 babies (3' in length) with them.

My guess is that where there is dolphins, there are fish to feed them and the water was crystal clear.

The visibility has been pretty good this year from Breezy point, to wayyy out east. Last week I was anchored over a wreck in 25ft of water. I could see straight down to the bottom and see hundreds of fish down there, not to mention an insane amount of triggerfish! (this is about a mile from the beach) Once you get about 30miles from shore you start to pick up the gulf stream. You wouldn't believe that we have crystal clear BLUE BLUE water with over a 50ft visibility in NY.

Hitsnorth there is a boat in sheapshead bay called the Jeanie II. They should be able to give you any info you're looking for.

Hre's a few pics from past fishing trips about 30miles offshore

Here is a good source of information on LI diving:
http://www.njscuba.net/sites/chart_li_coast.html

Also, the area known as "Paradise Found" is currently home to a lot of tropical fish. I think some reefers go out there and catch them for their tanks during this season. They would die otherwise due to the climate change:
http://www.newsday.com/other/specia...960mar16,0,2261796.story?coll=ny-nw-nav-promo

And of course, people have apparently been catching lionfish off LI, which is funny because lionfish are only found in the Pacific and Indian oceans. There was a hurricane which destroyed a home in Florida about 15 years ago. The owner kept several lionfish in his tank, and they were all swept out to sea in the storm. So now we have a lionfish population off LI!

cool, now you got me in the mood to take out a fishing boat from sheapshead bay. which is the best one to take (note: i'd go with my wife, neither of us are experienced fishers).

dont you worry about eating fish that are living in that polution?

If the polution doesnt keep ppl out of the water, the sharks sure as hell should!
