Product description:

Purigen? is a premium synthetic adsorbent that is unlike any other filtration product. It is not a mixture of ion exchangers or adsorbents, but a unique macro-porous synthetic polymer that removes soluble and insoluble impurities from water at a rate and capacity that exceeds all others, even HyperSorb?, by over 500%. Purigen?; removes protiens, nitrites and nitrates, ammonia, and a broad spectrum of organics, yet its impact on trace elements is minimal. It significantly raises redox. It polishes water to unparalleled clarity. Like HyperSorb?, Purigen? darkens progressively as it exhausts, and is easily renewed by treating with household bleach. A 100 mL bag of Purigen? purifies and polishes up to 100 gallons of water for up to six months. Purigen? is designed for both marine and freshwater use.

Does this stuff actually work? What's your experience with it? Does it really last for six months? Its sounds like one of those useless Mark Weiss additives

I used it a couple of times before I had the reef tank, I have no way of knowing if it helped. I may recharge the two packs I have and try it again.

Wow, the product description sounds like the magic pill I need to lower my nitrates, I wonder if it lowers Phosphate too. How do you use this stuff? With a reactor?
Just have a look at thePurigen link. Its quite simple to use and recharge.

I have used it. I dont know about how well it works I clean them out and "recharge" them. It seems to collect a lot of stuff quickly and is a PITA to clean all the time they seem to last 3-4 days then I have to pull them out and clean them. Sometime I just throw them in a filter sock for added filtration.

Ive used it, saw no real difference in comparison to carbon, and it didnt lower my nitrates, barely had any, at least when I checked it.
Maybe I'll try it again after I'm done w/ my carbon. It's supposed to be cheaper than carbon as you can recharge it several times w/ bleach. But im too scurrred personally to anything w/ bleach and my tank. Plus it would be a PITA as the granules are small as hell. The only real pro is that its not organic like carbon so no PO4 would be released, not even tiny amounts.

And yes some people I think JB NY included have/do run their purigen in a reactor.

you can run it in a phosban reactor.

I too would be too scared to recharge it with bleach (and too much of a hassle). If anyone wants my used purigen to recharge it and use it, feel free.

Hey Guys!

cali_reef sent me a PM to come over here.

I've been using it for a little over a year now. I think it works very much like carbon. I don't think it's a magic bullet or anything but I do think it does a good job of removing some dissolved organics and helping to keep PO4 down if you have any problems associated with it.

Here is how I sort of gage if these products do anything for me. In my refugium, in the baffles for where the water enters and exits, not the main section, I always have some cyano. Don't know why, it get low light and tons of flow, but it always seems to accumulate there. Anyway, when using purigen I notice that these areas have less cyano than when not using it. That's it. I don't notice any amazing changes in my reef, or the colors of the corals or anything, just these areas of the refugium look cleaner.

A bag of it cost me $5.99 at the LFS, I use two and replace them about every 6 months. So for me the $12 I spend on it is worthwhile.

I have tried using it in a phosban reactor but found that the small size of the particles would always make their way out of the reactor and into my sump.
