Temp swing

Is 3-4 degree temp swing throughout the day too much for a reef/SPS tank?

What is the exact range? 3-4 degrees should be fine.

I was on a dive once and we experienced a current (not a thermocline) that shifted the water temp from 87 to 75 in about a second. This happened several times over a few minutes. It was a pretty bizarre feeling, kind of like when the temperature in the shower changes quickly.

80 to 83-84 when the MHs are on.

Thats a bit warm. You should try and keep it around 77-81. Do you have an open top on the tank? How many fans are blowing through the hood?

I would think that at 83-84 the SPS would definately be stressed.

i run my tank ,on 79 to 81, 82 ,,,,all softies thou ,tank is doing great on this ttemp ,,
but ide like to ask ,,everytime i went snorkling or diving ,in the carribean , i never went into the water and had lees temps then that ,,
why do some places say to keep water temp at 72 .77 ...
