I went to high school no college. (I am actually proud of that)There wasen't a lot of higher education going on in the sixtees, we also had that draft thing.
Some things seem to be better new and some old.
My tank is very old technology, I would light it with candles if I could do it without burning the house down but my house is new school.
I even installed Solar Electricity.
My tank is also new school, everything is automatic from feeding, lighting, topping off and leak detection. Then there is that UG filter which is old but running it in reverse is new.
As soon as I could get my hands on a fully electric car I will have one. If I charge the thing in the day time, it will be free due to the solar panels.
I cure fish with old methods that most people never heard of and treat NSW with Clorox which is even older.
I make my own calcium (i don't know if that is old or new)
My gravel is old, over 40 years as are most of my rock, but most of my new rocks are home made which I like much better.
I have some aquarium magazines from the sixtees, they all talk about blue devils and dominoes. They are printed in black and white.
Of course, I am old which allows me to ramble.

A buddy of mine has a marine book from the early seventies. I was taking a look at it the other day, and got a kick out of it. The opening section about choosing a tank was talking about how they could only dream of the day when they could get an all glass tank approaching 50 gallons.

I too wish I could put solar panels up on my condo but I can't due to the associations rules, I would love to get a car that runs on electricity but unfortunately they are too expensive for 4 of me to afford right now and I can't run an extension chord outside, Condo association rules again and liability god forbid anyone got hurt. I buy my live rock from members and from my LFS, I have a nano tank. I research my information online and don't buy magazines anymore except for pc gamer and maximum pc and of course comic books because other magazines I throw away those I keep forever.

I really don't care from what school you come from. Times have changed, technology has changed some for the better others for the worst. We have a responsibility to the animals which we choose to care fore. And if technology, times, or whatever prevent the proper care of these animals then something needs to change. It is up to us to educate properly and change and if that can't be done responsibly then I don't know what to tell you.

Well said Chief :)

Not sure how to respond to this thread. I guess the bottom line is results. There are many ways to keep a reef. I don't like the saying that every reef is different. I believe they are all the same and will respond the same way given the same set of variables. The trick is to use your knowledge as a reefer to compensate for a lacking system and know your limits for a system that uses an aggressive filtration system.
