I got a Hammerhead Coral yesterday from LFS. It's beautiful and healthy Hammer I think. And I just searched it from Reefcentral and I learned it's Anchor Hammer type. It's like Z shape. But my question is, only the half of the shape has Hammer and rest is showing skeleton (I am not sure if that's right word for it). Do you think my Hammer will spread out and fill that spot? If not, do I have to cut that part off? I should take a picture tonight and show it to you guys.

The hammer polyps may cover the skeleton when they fully expand, but they will not "refill" that skeleton. Cutting off the dead skeleton is your choice, but only do so if you feel comfortable "fragging".

p.s. Why buy it if it was showing skeleton?

Well, it has very nice size. Right now I hide that skeleton part with my LR so it's not ugly. And I thought Hammer might grow and cover that part out. hehe

Anyway, thanks for help. I will post picture of my coral soon. It looks so pretty. They also had really nice looking Frogspawn, I think I am going to get that one as well.

Oh that...I have about 15 lbs of live rock made up of skeleton like that. You can see some on the leftside of this pic:

I don't have any corals yet since this is very new tank. I am planning to put this guy on the corner and put rest of my coral away from it. Plus I will get better flow to the corner and hopely the sweeper stays away from them. Thanks.

I have not heard of anyone getting stung from a hammer coral, but with all LPS there is some risk, different people have different reactions.

I don't think it is necessary to wear a glove, just always try to hold the piece from the hard skeleton base and you should be fine.

I wouldn't worry about the skeleton, as long as the polyps are out and the skeleton is not white or very close to where the coral is growing now, it is most likely damage from a while ago since it is covered with coraline and dirt.

Generally I try to cut these parts away from the coral so I have more room for it to grow and it also makes it easier to arrange your rock.

If you are coming to the frag swap I'm sure someone will be doing some LPS cutting, I'll be bringing a Dremel in case it is needed. As long as you steer clear of the new growth when you cut you will be fine.
