HELP!!! tank crashed!!!

Make the determination on when to do the next WC by the way the tank looks tomorrow. If things seem to be recovering wait, if they look bad or worse do another water change. A large drastic water change in an emergency situation is a reasonable course of action.

moidol, i do all the cleaning related to the tank. i never use any chemicals around the tank or even spray air freshener. I'm starting to suspect that plastic mesh may have had something on it? it's just weird because i used it my tank before.

the other picasso clownfish died this morning. the hobbist that i bought it from said she will replace my clownfish, but i just have to pay for shipping, so that's one thing off my mind. still sucks because i thought mine were perfect!

on a side note, this is the best forum with the best reefers! no where else can i have so many people helping me out and giving me advice, and in such a short time span too. even marc offered to house my livestock!

i just wanted to say thanks to everyone and i will give an update after work today.

Should I do another 20% change?

Corals look better and remaining fish act like nothing happened. acans are out, xenia looks better and pumping slightly, frogspawn out more, zoas opened up a bit, gsp came out some more as well, lobo puffier.

I plan on swapping out carbon for a new one though.

cant tell by pics is it still cloudy...if not check the ph and ammonia again..if ammonia is still high i would do another water change 10 to 20% not a 80%...its been hours since you last 1 so u should be fine for another 1.if not changing carbon would be good and just monitor the tank.

looks much better. Couldn't hurt to do one more 20% water change and add fresh carbon. Then give it a few days to see how things progress.

It really looks pretty good. I'd change the carbon tonight and do another 10-20% WC tomorrow.

most likely the problem was from a faulty heater.check the temperature with another termommeter.most heaters on the market are not reliable.

Do you dose anything in the tank? If your calcium levels get too high they can precipitate into the water and cause cloudiness and also crash a tank from what I hear. Also do you run a fuge in the back chamber of your BC14? Maybe your fuge plant went sexual. That can also cause a tank crash.

Based on the thread the question that came to my mind about this crash is 'was to much added to quickly'. Adding fish/corals/inverts does cause a mini cycle as the balance has been altered, in such a small tank perhaps adding 2 fish was more then the system could handle at one time causing a cycle larger then could be tolerated.

Duke, I have the wirey chaeto in my fuge. I thought chaeto doesn't go asexual, only calupra? New pics are less cloudy.

qy7400, I used to have 3 fish in there before I sold one and got 2 more, bringing the total to 4 fish. I don't think that was a huge change. I didn't purchase any more corals at the time either.

Marteen, I do not dose anything for my tank. Only water changes every week (using reef crystals).

I don't believe my heater was the issue tommy, I have two thermometers in the tank, one digital and they both read 80 degrees. Maybe while I was at work something happened? I don't know

I figured out that the two picassos died from oxygen asphixiation. It's interesting to note that my other two old fish showed no signs, perhaps it was the stress of shipping that did them in...

When I get home, I will take new pics and make some new water for a 20% water change tomorrow.

I believe the biggest improvement is the xenia. They are more pink and lush thank before.

The plan for tomorrow is, 20% water change and more carbon. Good idea?

i'm in the process of setting up my new solana. should I use anything from this 14g to start it or should i just sit through a fresh cycle?

or should I wait until my 14g recovers and then use that to seed the new tank? suggestions? I do want to keep my old live rock at the very least...

sounds like an amonia spike probably from a snail or hermit dyin small vollume of water wasnt able to dillute the toxins fast enough amonia cause the water to cloud do what the firs guy recomended put some streess coat in the tank and u might want to run an air bubbler to increase the dissolved oxygen levels and help to rid the tank of amonia

The tank looks good. I'd proceed with the WC and carbon change tomorrow and then leave it alone for awhile unless things take a turn for the worse.

Regarding the Solana setup---slow down-- you just had a tank crisis let this stabilize before you get involved with something else. Once you are in the clear, you can use your old rock and sand and most of your water and I would expect a very small cycle if any in the new system.

4 fish is a lot for a 14 gal. Probably too much and picassos are not the best shippers so the combination is probably what killed them.
